Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has made it clear that the state will not tolerate any form of crime or criminal activity.
He cautioned offenders and anyone planning to supply arms for political violence that they would be dealt with strictly according to the law.
The governor delivered the message on Wednesday while hosting the newly posted Commissioner of Police for Delta State, CP Samuel Erale, during a courtesy call at Government House in Asaba.
Oborevwori described security as a core priority under his administration’s MORE Agenda. He emphasised that lasting peace and public safety are vital for attracting investment, driving economic progress and protecting the welfare of residents.
He noted that the government applies a strict, impartial stance against crime, regardless of an offender’s position or political links, and that no one will receive protection from prosecution.
Quoting the governor: “If you are my brother, if you are my friend, if you commit, you go for it. Nobody is above the law.”
Oborevwori encouraged the new commissioner to maintain intelligence-driven and well-coordinated policing. He specifically called for tighter monitoring of neighbourhoods, major roads and waterways, with special attention to riverine communities.
He also pressed for closer partnership among the police, other security bodies, traditional leaders, youth representatives, local vigilante groups and the wider community, arguing that grassroots policing builds public confidence and yields better intelligence.
In addition, the governor raised concern over the spread of illegal guns, especially the possession of rifles by private individuals. He directed security agencies to step up the recovery of unauthorised weapons and the arrest of those holding them.
Oborevwori reaffirmed that the state will keep backing the police and sister agencies through the Delta State Security Trust Fund, which supplies operational vehicles and other essential logistics.
He further assured CP Erale of continued government support aimed at preserving the current climate of peace in Delta, including throughout the election season.
Earlier, the police commissioner pledged his full commitment to the governor and the people of Delta to uphold law and order across the state.
CP Erale said he would operate with professionalism and discipline and ensure these standards guide every unit under his command.
He added that he intends to reorganise the state’s security framework and build upon the progress made by previous commissioners in order to enhance safety throughout Delta.
