Agbor, Delta State – A tragic train derailment in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, has left four people dead and dozens injured, prompting an immediate and comprehensive response from Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
The Governor expressed profound grief over the incident, which he described as “heartbreaking and unfortunate.”
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori extended his deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones and offered prayers for the rapid recovery of those receiving medical care.
He emphasized that the state government swiftly mobilized emergency services and relevant authorities to the accident site to provide urgent assistance to victims.
Governor Oborevwori wasted no time in directing key officials, including the Commissioner for Special Duties and the Chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas, to the scene to personally oversee rescue operations.
He also lauded security agencies for their quick intervention, noting that the Commissioner of Police was on-site, ensuring the safety of passengers’ belongings.
Injured passengers were promptly transported to nearby hospitals, while uninjured survivors were moved to safety.
The bodies of the deceased have been respectfully placed in the mortuary. Buses were dispatched without delay to facilitate the evacuation of all affected individuals.
Hon. Monday Odigwe, Chairman of the Ika North-East Local Government Council, provided an update on the casualties, confirming that 35 injured passengers are currently receiving medical attention across three hospitals: 13 at Central Hospital, Agbor; 12 at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu; and 10 at General Hospital, Owa-Alero. Efforts are reportedly underway to lift the derailed train by Tuesday.
Governor Oborevwori concluded by praying for the peaceful rest of the departed souls and for strength for their families during this difficult time.
He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and safety of Delta State residents, pledging continuous monitoring of the situation and ongoing support for those hospitalized.
