In a groundbreaking initiative, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in collaboration with the Tony Elumelu Foundation and the Delta State Government, has provided financial grants to empower 1,000 women traders across Delta State.
The program aims to support their businesses and foster growth within the community.
Hosted in Asaba, the event is part of a larger nationwide women’s empowerment initiative launched by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The initiative seeks to bolster small-scale businesses and offer sustainable economic support to women at the grassroots level.
During her address, Senator Tinubu clarified that the financial assistance provided through the program is a grant, not a loan, aimed at revitalizing existing businesses.
She emphasized the critical role of women’s empowerment in facilitating growth within families and communities.
“It is my firm belief that when you empower a woman, you empower a household, a community, and indeed, a nation,” the First Lady affirmed.
Senator Tinubu also praised the Tony Elumelu Foundation for its generous commitment of ₦1 billion to this cause, which will directly benefit 18,500 women across Nigeria.
Each state, including the FCT, will see 500 beneficiaries receive ₦50,000 each to aid in their enterprise development.
Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, the wife of the Delta State Governor, highlighted the inclusiveness of this year’s initiative and noted her husband’s administration’s support, which has enabled the recapitalization of an additional 500 women traders.
The initiative has successfully raised the total number of beneficiaries in Delta State to 1,000.
Deaconess Oborevwori elaborated on the diverse backgrounds of the beneficiaries, saying, “Among the 1,000 recipients are Christian and Muslim women groups, wives of military and paramilitary personnel, journalists, and women from the Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa communities.”
“This inclusivity reflects the true spirit of the Renewed Hope Initiative,” she added.
She urged the women to make prudent use of the grants, encourage their families, and contribute to the development of their communities.
Also, she called for ongoing prayers and support for her husband, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as they work towards creating more opportunities for women.
The event culminated in a symbolic presentation of ₦50,000 to selected traders, an occasion attended by dignitaries, community leaders, and representatives from women’s organizations.
The beneficiaries expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the timely support, which they believe will significantly aid in expanding their businesses and providing for their families.

…as Hundreds Decorated as Political Colonels in Iwhrekan
By Sunday Apah
Former Member of the House of Representatives and Deputy National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Dr. Chris Oghenechovwen, has stated that, given the pace at which the Ughelli South Political Colonels are growing in numbers, the APC will win all elections in the local government area in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Oghenechovwen made this known when the USPC paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Iwhrekan, Ughievwen Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, stating that the USPC doesn’t need an introduction to him; rather, he will be the one to introduce them to others.
Oplus_16908288
He recalled that the group was previously known as ‘The Political Majors,’ who were the political engine room of Ughelli South politics, led by Chief Francis Aguonigho, along with some now deceased members.
“Now that you have all been promoted to Political Colonels, you will perform even better because we have all become one (both new and longstanding APC members).
“Right now, the group has grown like a mustard seed. This is the only political pressure group in Ughelli South, and I know you are ready to work because you have already made significant progress.
“I understand you have visited our national leader, Olorogun John Oguma, who has done very well for the party, Ughelli South LGA, and this group; he is indeed a good man.
“We know that with this formidable group in place, there is no political party in Ughelli South LGA that can defeat the APC in 2027,” he added.
He advised the group to prioritize Voter Registration in their agenda, as there is a pressing need to increase the number of registered voters in the local government area.
He further urged the group to draw in more of the longstanding APC members who have not fully embraced the group and to encourage some PDP members who are still hesitant to join the APC so that the LGA and the state can move forward.
He noted that the leaders are still working to ensure that those who fear being sidelined come together to pursue a common goal.
“Ughelli South used to win all elections in the past, but in the last election, the PDP lost some seats because some of us left the party. Now that we have come together, we will win all the elections.
“Some of the reasons for the losses in previous elections were that some individuals felt shortchanged regarding elective positions. This will not be the case in 2027.
“Very soon, congresses will occur, which may bring some chaos. However, with determination and unity of purpose, we will overcome and emerge victorious in all elections in Ughelli South.
“I want you all to continue striving to ensure that both old and new members of the APC remain united and do not falter, as other local government areas in the state are already trying to emulate our model,” he added.
Earlier, Olorogun John Akaruayen Ewenede, Chairman of the Ughelli South Political Colonels, along with Publicity Secretary Dcn. Matthew Kwode, stated that the objective was to introduce the group’s executives to the deputy national leader of the APC in the local government area.

Urhobo Palace Representatives in Oil, Gas Communities Group Inaugurated
By Sunday Apah
A group, the Urhobo Palace Representatives in Oil and Gas Communities, has been inaugurated with a task to address issues of marginalization of traditional institutions and host communities.
The inauguration, which was held at the Palace of the Chairman of Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, had in attendance HRM Dr. Matthew Ediri Egbi, Okobaro of Ughievwen Kingdom; HRM Dr. Wilson Ojakovo, Oharisi III, Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom; HRM King Monday Whiskey, Udurhie I, Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom; HRM Okiemute Onajite Igere I, Ovie of Ogor Kingdom; HRM Michael Avwerotakpo Eyareya II, Orovworere of Effurun-Otor; HRM Uku Odjevworo Akpomeyoma Majoroh, Ojeta II, Ovie of Oruarivie Abraka Kingdom; HRM Morris Ogheneochuko Eyekpimi, Orosuen of Okere Urhobo Kingdom; HRM Noble Eshemitan, Orefe III, Ovie of Oghara Kingdom; HRM Dr. Emmanuel Ekemejewa Sideso, Abe I, Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom (represented); Ovie of Uwheru Kingdom (represented); and others who were duly represented at the ceremony.
In his speech during the ceremony, HRM Major General Felix Mujakperuo (rtd), Orhue I, Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, lamented the continued neglect of host communities by oil companies despite the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
He decried the sidelining of traditional institutions and host communities in decision-making processes, stressing the need for inclusiveness and justice.
According to him, “We cannot be seen moving from company to company in search of attention. For instance, a company is operating in my area, yet I do not even know where their office is located.
“That is not right. Before the PIA, traditional institutions only got crumbs from oil companies, but now even those crumbs have been removed. This creates confusion. How can host communities be sidelined?” he queried.
The monarch further frowned at the exclusion of Urhobo indigenes from managerial positions in oil firms and the persistent award of contracts to outsiders.
He said, “How can you be doing projects in my community and yet bring contractors from other states? We have capable people here, yet they are suffering. These are the issues that must be addressed.”
Thereafter, the swearing-in ceremony and oath of office taking was administered by Barrister Ige Asemudara, one of the representatives, legal adviser/consultant of the Urhobo Palace Representatives in Oil and Gas Communities group.
Those sworn in included Chief Wilson Ejeben (Chairman), Chief Oke Clifford, Chief Christopher Otobrise, Dr. Prince Igho Egbi (Secretary), Barr. Precious Onojegbe, Chief Francis Iritefe, Chief Frank Emiko, Chief Henry Abizor, Chief John Edgar, Chief John Obruche, Chief Lucky Esievo, Doghor Bernard, Dr. Lucky Ighoyota, Mr. Abel Jessa, Chief Pender Timpson Okiodoro, Prince Desmond Ochuko, Prince Olori Delekpe, Chief Justice Obohwoyere, among others.
Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated Urhobo Palace Representatives in Oil and Gas Communities group, Olorogun Wilson Ejeben (Chairman) assured the Urhobo monarchs of his unwavering commitment to the new assignment, promising to fight for equity, fairness, and meaningful development in oil-bearing communities.
“My promise to all our revered kings and to the entire Urhobo Kingdoms is simple: you have entrusted us with your confidence, just as an army is entrusted with weapons for battle.
“By God’s grace, I will not waste this opportunity. We will work as one team, raise the Urhobo flag high, and make you proud,” he said.
The people of Agbowhiame Community, Ughievwen Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, have taken a stand against what they described as the encroachment of their land by the OML 34 AMT, NEPL/ND-Western joint venture.
On Monday morning, community members gathered in their hundreds near Well 10 to voice their concerns about the ongoing preparatory work for the redrilling of the oil well.
Leading the protest was Mr. Emmanuel Osieta, the President General of the Agbowhiame Community. With unwavering determination, he emphasized the importance of the demonstration, stating that their primary objective was to make the company aware of their grievances.
“We are here to let the company know that our land has been encroached upon as a result of the ongoing work at Well 10,” he declared passionately.
Osieta urged OML 34 AMT, NEPL/ND-Western to address the matter directly with community leaders, suggesting that an official engagement could pave the way for a resolution.
He emphasized that the company must seek proper approval from the community before proceeding further with their operations.
The community is adamant that their rights must be respected and that communication is essential for finding a way forward.
“We expect that compensation for land use should follow any agreement reached. Furthermore, employment opportunities for our youths are essential for the development of our community,” he asserted, underscoring the economic impact of the oil venture.
Other community leaders who spoke with journalists, including Mr. Aselor Peter and Miss Ighovwakpor, expressed their intention to use all legal means possible to protect their land rights.
The leaders stated that despite efforts by some sponsored individuals to destabilize the protest, the outcome was positive.
