As the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) approaches its pivotal elections, we stand at a moment of profound significance in our shared journey. This election is not just another administrative procedure; it is a vital opportunity for us to reaffirm our collective integrity, unity, and unwavering dedication to advancing our community.
The UPU, as our foremost socio-cultural institution, carries the critical responsibility of conducting an election that reflects the values, discipline, and accountability that have forged our identity and made us proud.
In recent times, troubling concerns about potential irregularities and inaccuracies in the delegate list have surfaced. It is crucial that every stakeholder, aspirant, and member of the Urhobo Nation feels assured about the integrity of this process. We believe that clarity is essential and that transparency is not merely an expectation—it is our constitutional right.
*The UPU Constitution is clear on the matter:*
The categories of eligible voters must be explicitly defined, structured, and publicly shared before any election can occur. Anything less jeopardises our trust and invites scepticism regarding the electoral process.
*OUR ASSERTIVE DEMAND: FULL TRANSPARENCY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE UPU CONSTITUTION*
We call upon the Electoral Committee to act decisively and immediately publish:
1. A thorough and verified list of accredited delegates, encompassing all categories as mandated by the UPU Constitution.
2. The total number of eligible voters under each category, ensuring that these numbers are definitive and certified, leaving no room for doubt or ambiguity.
At this critical juncture, it is vital for the electoral body’s credibility that it has a clear understanding of its voter register.
We acknowledge the categories for eligible voters as defined by our Constitution:
*ELIGIBLE VOTERS AS CONSTITUTIONALLY DEFINED*
Category A: 20 delegates per Kingdom
Category B: Members of the National Executive Council (NEC)
Category C:
– Council of Representatives: 4 delegates per active UPU branch
– UPU Women Wing Exco
– UPU Youth Wing Exco
Category D: All aspirants (automatic delegates eligible to vote for themselves only)
Despite these established categories, the actual numbers of kingdoms, branches, NEC members, council representatives, youth/women wing executives, and aspirants have not been explicitly published. This lack of transparency is not only concerning but also unacceptable, casting a shadow on the integrity of our electoral aspirations.
*OUR CALL FOR THE PUBLICATION OF QUALIFIED BRANCHES AND AFFILIATES*
We respectfully insist that the Electoral Committee publish the complete list of branches and affiliates authorised to vote on or before Tuesday 2nd December 2025, in strict compliance with the constitutional criteria for “active branches.” This should include:
– Branch name
– Status (active or inactive)
– Number of accredited delegates
– Evidence of compliance with constitutional requirements
This level of transparency is not only warranted but also a fundamental expectation from an institution of the UPU’s stature.
*ENSURING DIASPORA PARTICIPATION*
Countless individuals in the diaspora have:
– Secured international travel arrangements
– Adjusted their schedules
– Committed to participating actively in this election
We confidently seek confirmation regarding:
– Our registration status
– Our voting rights
– Our recognition as legitimate stakeholders under the constitution
Addressing these requests is essential for reinforcing our belief in the electoral process and restoring trust among all participants.
*A RESOUNDING MESSAGE TO THE ELECTORAL COMMITTEE*
We fully trust that the Electoral Committee comprises respected individuals dedicated to upholding the highest standards of integrity. However, integrity must be visibly demonstrated through transparency and accountability.
The publication of the delegate list is not merely a formality; it is a fundamental constitutional and ethical obligation that aligns with the principles we cherish deeply.
The future of our nation hinges on this election. Therefore, we anticipate it to be conducted:
– With complete transparency
– Free from secrecy
– Uncompromised by manipulation
– Unbiased toward any aspirant or faction
*A CALL FOR UNITY AND COMMITMENT TO OUR COMMUNITY*
Disenfranchising any members of the Urhobo community is an absolute non-negotiable. It endangers our collective aspirations and undermines the UPU’s core values.
Let us rise above division, honour the legacy of our ancestors, and pave a strong foundation for future generations.
*FINAL THOUGHTS*
We firmly believe that only through unwavering transparency, strict adherence to our constitution, and ethical conduct can we guarantee the integrity of this election.
Clarity and openness will not only restore the trust of the Urhobo Nation but also reinforce our position as a unified and respected voice for our people.
Let us champion transparency, embrace unity, and allow truth to guide our paths forward.
