Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Delta State’s Director General of the Orientation and Communications Bureau, has called on Senator Ned Nwoko to collaborate with the Federal Government and relevant agencies to expedite the completion of the Okpai Power Plant.
He emphasized that the Delta State government does not have direct control over the project.
Oghenesivbe’s remarks come in response to Senator Nwoko’s criticism of Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori regarding the power plant’s completion.
While praising the senator’s enthusiasm for the project, Oghenesivbe clarified the roles of the various stakeholders involved.
“The Okpai Power Plant is a joint venture involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), and other multinational entities. Given the federal government’s significant stake, it remains a national asset rather than a state initiative,” he explained.
He defended Governor Oborevwori’s leadership, stating that the governor’s success in managing state resources does not require validation from Senator Nwoko.
“His leadership has consistently reflected equity and wisdom across the state’s three senatorial districts,” Oghenesivbe added.
Touching on the economic importance of the Warri Stadium project, he noted that its transformation into a world-class facility would create jobs and opportunities for youth.
He stressed that Senator Nwoko does not possess the authority to dictate governance matters to the governor.
“In response to Nwoko’s criticisms, it’s important to remember that constructive dialogue should be respectful and devoid of derogatory remarks. His recent statements do not reflect the views of Delta North residents,” Oghenesivbe asserted.
He pointed out that while Senator Nwoko has been vocal now, he was notably silent during the previous administration.
Oghenesivbe stated that development initiatives should encompass all districts, emphasizing the necessity of equitable developmental focus rather than prioritizing one over another.
“The Okpai Power Plant’s completion is primarily the federal government’s responsibility, and involving the Delta State Government in that process might lead to confusion and inefficiencies,” he cautioned.
He urged Senator Nwoko to use his position to facilitate communication among the federal stakeholders, thereby resolving any existing issues affecting the project’s timeline.
Oghenesivbe reinforced that ongoing investigations by the House of Representatives regarding the project’s abandonment should unite efforts towards resolution rather than creating unnecessary discord.
He highlighted the potential benefits of a cooperative approach for the people of Delta State and Nigeria.
In conclusion, he advised Senator Nwoko to return his focus to legislative duties, emphasizing the importance of unity and respect within the political discourse.
“Governor Oborevwori is fulfilling his mandate, and interventions from Senator Nwoko should aim to enhance, not disrupt, the governance process,” Oghenesivbe remarked.
The Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF), a non-governmental organization, has issued a call to tertiary institutions to foster an environment that prioritizes responsible consumption, waste reduction, and recycling.
This appeal was articulated by CODAF’s Executive Director, Mr. Richard Benin, during the unveiling of the Zero Waste Campus Project at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE).
In his address at the event, Mr. Benin stated, “We are embarking on a transformative journey towards sustainability, empowering our university community to actively address the pressing issue of plastic pollution, especially the challenge posed by single-use plastics.”
He noted that FUPRE is the first institution in Nigeria to initiate this project, emphasizing the importance of striving to make it the leading Zero Waste University in both Nigeria and Africa.
“It is our responsibility as a community of thinkers and researchers to exemplify the values of sustainability and accountability,” he continued.
“The Zero Waste Campus Project offers a holistic approach to fostering a sustainable culture on our campuses, which encompasses not just reducing plastic waste. Our aim is to cultivate an ecosystem that prioritizes responsible consumption, waste reduction, and composting.”
Within this framework, each member of the university community will have the opportunity to contribute to a healthier, greener planet.
Plans include the implementation of reusable containers, educational efforts on waste sorting, and advocacy for sustainable alternatives.
“For this initiative to be successful, it is crucial to enhance the support systems that underpin our daily campus life,” Mr. Benin urged.
“I call on university administrators to earnestly adopt the Plastic-Free Campus Blueprint, as it will provide a clear pathway to practical solutions—ranging from minimizing single-use plastics in our facilities to eliminating plastic packaging in campus stores and stopping open dumping of waste.”
He also emphasized the need for a Postgraduate Program in Zero Waste Management, which would not only address health and safety concerns but also play a critical role in reducing reliance on plastic waste.
“If approved, this program would place the institution in a unique position, as FUPRE would be the first university in the world to offer such a curriculum,” he stated.
“This initiative will empower our campus community to make environmentally sound choices and significantly mitigate plastic pollution.
“Your dedication is essential for the success of this project, and I am excited to collaborate with each of you as we embark on this journey together.”
The Vice Chancellor of FUPRE, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, along with the Deputy Vice Chancellor and other senior officials, remarked,
“The university serves as a cradle of knowledge that addresses various challenges, especially environmental issues, and we understand the detrimental effects of improper waste management.”
He added, “Through our Center for Waste Management, we recognized the necessity of partnering with organizations to initiate this project, converting waste into wealth for societal betterment. Our goal is to leverage our knowledge to benefit our campus, home to over 15,000 students, and eventually extend our impact to the community.”
“In discussions with the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration, it became evident that we have a critical gap in knowledge regarding sustainability in the country.
“We are looking to refine our programs, potentially introducing a Postgraduate Diploma in Waste Management and Technology to address this issue.”
He affirmed that university management fully supports the initiative, with plans to launch the program during the 2025/2026 academic year, emphasizing the importance of teaching waste management technologies and principles.
The event also featured contributions from Dr. Akinyemi Ogunkeyede and Weyinmi Okotie, a Clean Energy Campaigner at GAIA Africa, among others.
A key highlight of the launch was the two-day training program for 60 FUPRE students, who will serve as ambassadors for the Zero Waste Campus initiative.

In a commendable act of generosity, Delta State businessman and politician Olorogun Emuobor Gbagi covered the hospital bills for several patients at the General Hospital in Otu-Jeremi, located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area, as part of World Charity Day celebrations.
Chief Gbagi emphasized that his donation was a reminder for all Nigerians to embrace a culture of giving back to their communities.

Recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit and charitable initiatives, Chief Gbagi’s actions resonate with the spirit of the International Day of Charity, established by the United Nations on September 5.
This day highlights the importance of compassion and generosity, particularly toward the less fortunate.
On World Charity Day, Chief Gbagi’s generosity significantly impacted the lives of over ten patients at Otu-Jeremi General Hospital, where he paid their outstanding medical bills.
Many of these individuals had been enduring prolonged hospital stays, some awaiting necessary surgeries that had been financially out of reach.

He urged fellow Nigerians to engage in acts of love and kindness, reinforcing the message that caring for one another is a fundamental teaching.
He stated, “Those who are able should consistently demonstrate generosity towards the less privileged and vulnerable in our society. Such acts reflect our commitment to the core human values of empathy and unity that bind us all together.”

As the 8th National Youth Games (NYG) commenced in Asaba, Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori highlighted the state’s strong reputation for fostering sports development in Nigeria.
During the opening ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Thursday, Oborevwori expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the event for the second consecutive year. “We take great pride in welcoming this event once again. Delta State is synonymous with sports in Nigeria,” he stated.

With approximately 6,000 athletes and over 1,000 officials participating, this year’s event sets a new record,” he added.
Oborevwori also articulated his concern about Nigeria’s declining performance in recent sports events and proposed that the age limit for the National Youth Games be adjusted back to the original upper limit of U-17, instead of the current U-15.
“This change would facilitate a smoother transition for our talented older teenagers and young adults into the senior category of Team Nigeria, minimizing gaps in their competitive journey.”

Sheriff Oborevwori contributed additional support with 1,200 cartons of noodles, 1,200 liters of cooking oil, and other essential items, complementing the rice provided through federal assistance.
