On Tuesday, Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment of host communities by oil companies, while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining uninterrupted oil production in the state.

The Governor made these remarks during a courtesy visit from the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited at the Government House in Asaba.

Governor Oborevwori pointed out that a significant portion of the state’s revenue comes from oil production, and he expressed his desire to avoid any disruptions to this critical sector.

“If oil production increases, Delta State will benefit,” he noted, highlighting that the state currently leads the nation in oil production.

“I will not permit oil companies to mistreat their host communities, nor will I tolerate actions from host communities that disrupt oil production.

“Our economic well-being heavily relies on this industry, and any operation interruption will detrimentally affect our state,” he stated.

The Governor showed appreciation for Chevron Nigeria Limited’s ongoing contributions to the state’s economy and community development, commending the company’s management for their engagement with the state government.

“I have a long-standing relationship with Chevron, as I am a native of Warri. I hold the company in high regard,” Governor Oborevwori added.

“While many companies have departed from Warri, Chevron continues to thrive here, affirming that Warri is indeed a home for Chevron. That is why I consistently encourage collaboration between the company and the host communities.”

He acknowledged Chevron’s efforts in social responsibility but emphasized the need for further assistance, saying, “Our communities have pressing needs, and you have assured us of your willingness to do more. My agenda is centered on MORE for Deltans.”

The Governor also recalled a recent meeting with leaders of the Itsekiri Nation, where issues surrounding electricity and water quality were discussed.

He mentioned ongoing efforts to address water concerns and encouraged Chevron to contribute further.

“Recently, community members threatened to protest. I intervened because I believe in dialogue. It’s crucial for you to listen to these individuals. They are not unfamiliar to you, given your long-standing presence in the area,” he explained.

He noted a recent incident where community members occupied Chevron’s administration office in Ekpan and emphasized the role played by his administration to resolve the issue peacefully.

“Engaging with the community and understanding their concerns is vital. When job opportunities arise, prioritize hiring from among them, as they are your host communities,” he stressed.

“We want to see more of our people in significant management roles rather than just as temporary staff.”

Governor Oborevwori invited potential investors to take advantage of Delta State’s conducive business environment, assuring them that the region is secure for investment.

Earlier, the Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Jim Swartz, expressed gratitude for the mutually beneficial relationship with Delta State.

He reaffirmed Chevron’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening this partnership.

“Chevron has been operating in Nigeria for over sixty years, largely in collaboration with Delta State.

“We have significant contributions to the state’s welfare and a considerable presence here,” Swartz said, noting that Escravos is the center of their operations.

“We are proud of our reputation for timely tax payments and the projects we have initiated, including healthcare facilities, educational improvements, and infrastructure developments.

“These projects exemplify how businesses and communities can work together for mutual benefit,” he concluded.

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Itsekiri ethnic group have shown their unwavering support for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by passing a vote of confidence in him, pledging their backing through 2027 and beyond.

This endorsement took place during a visit by Itsekiri PDP members to Governor Oborevwori at his residence in Osubi, located in the Okpe Local Government Area, on Sunday.

During the meeting, Hon. Augustine Uroye, the representative for Warri South Constituency I in the Delta State House of Assembly, initiated the motion for the vote of confidence. He cited the Governor’s exemplary contributions to human capital development and the infrastructural advancements across all 25 Local Government Areas of the state as the basis for their support.

Hon. Uroye asserted that the Itsekiri people are committed to standing by the Governor beyond 2027 and encouraged him to persist in implementing his MORE Agenda.

The motion received a second from former lawmaker Hon. Misan Ukubeyinje, and was subsequently put to a voice vote by Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, the representative for the Warri Federal Constituency. The motion was unanimously accepted.

Following the endorsement, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed his gratitude for the show of confidence, stating that it would motivate him to further enhance his efforts for the people of Delta State through the MORE Agenda.

The Governor also acknowledged the support from PDP members in the Ethiope Federal Constituency and Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency, who had recently passed similar votes of confidence in him, assuring that every region of the state would benefit from his initiatives.

“I have a strong relationship with the Itsekiri community. In Warri, where I was raised, the people know me well,” said Governor Oborevwori. “Many present today are those I started this journey with, so this endorsement is not surprising to me. They believe in my abilities, and their support confirms their faith that I will not let them down.”

The meeting was attended by the state PDP chairman, Chief Solomon Arenyeka, along with elected officials and political appointees from the Itsekiri nation.

Delta State Trains SERVICOM Officers to Improve Service Delivery

The Delta State Government has urged its civil servants to recommit to delivering effective services aligned with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.

Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Secretary to the Delta State Government, made this appeal during a one-day training session for SERVICOM Officers held on Monday in Asaba.

Opening the workshop, Dr. Emu emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing service delivery across all ministries, departments, and agencies. He noted that this intensive training aimed to equip SERVICOM officers with the necessary skills to promote efficiency, transparency, and citizen satisfaction.

Addressing the challenges of inadequate service delivery in public sectors, he underscored the need for efficiency and effectiveness in governance. Dr. Emu urged participants to gain the knowledge, skills, and values crucial for delivering quality public service.

“As SERVICOM Officers, it is essential you familiarize yourselves with best practices, ethical standards, and innovative methods to enhance service delivery,” he stated. “This is a call to transition from inefficiency to competence, with a strong emphasis on citizen-centric service and ongoing learning.”

In his keynote address, Mr. Reginald Bayoko, the State Head of Service, stressed that governance extends beyond mere policies and legislation; it is about making a tangible impact. He reminded the SERVICOM officers that, particularly at the grassroots level, they represent the government and shape public perception through every interaction and service provided.

“When accountability is a collective obligation but lacks prioritization, service delivery suffers,” he warned. “We must avoid allowing inefficiency and bureaucracy to rob our citizens of the quality services they deserve. Our responsibilities are crucial, not merely symbolic.”

He quoted, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge,” highlighting it as a key aspect of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s approach to governance—focused on inclusivity, impact, and genuine concern for the people’s welfare.

Mr. Bayoko noted how Governor Oborevwori has consistently shown that improving workers’ welfare and strengthening public institutions are vital for sustainable governance.

Earlier in the session, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, Senior Policy Adviser to the Governor, referred to SERVICOM officers as integral to the civil service and urged them to embody the essence of service delivery, which is essential to the MORE Agenda.

“As champions of the MORE Agenda, you must be well-versed in the fundamental principles of SERVICOM and the key objectives of this initiative,” emphasized Solomon.

“The Governor’s unwavering focus on effective service delivery—marked by quality outcomes in projects, programs, and policies—is evident, particularly with the ongoing introduction of a whistle-blowing policy in the state.

“As advocates for superior service, you play a critical role in advancing this policy and ensuring exemplary service within the state’s public sector. This training is grounded on these core principles,” he concluded.

The Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has successfully completed renovations on a six-classroom block at Igbide Grammar School and an additional six-classroom block at Owodokpokpo Grammar School, significantly enhancing the infrastructure of these vital educational institutions.

Obiodeh expressed his appreciation for the state government’s prioritization of education as a crucial tool for youth empowerment and societal advancement.

The Delta State Government announced on Monday that the impressive achievements of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in terms of infrastructural and human capital development are causing unease among the opposition in the state.

During a radio program broadcast from Asaba, the state capital, Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, shared insights into the current political climate.

He stated that while the opposition is free to engage in political discourse, the governor’s focus remains firmly on governance and the implementation of the MORE Agenda.

“The opposition may engage in political maneuvering, but our priority is governance. When the appropriate time comes to discuss politics, we will let our accomplishments speak for themselves,” Aniagwu stated.

“Governor Oborevwori has significant achievements to showcase, which are already unsettling our opponents.”

He emphasized that instead of being drawn into political debates too prematurely, the government would respond by continuing to roll out more projects.

“We measure our success through the initiatives we deliver to the public. When our opponents speak, we will counter their claims with tangible evidence of our work,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of project visibility as a report card for the administration.

The Commissioner reassured that the Oborevwori administration would ultimately be evaluated based on its fulfillment of the promises made to the people. “Governor Oborevwori committed to maintaining and completing ongoing projects while initiating new ones.

Residents of Uvwie, Warri, and surrounding areas can attest to the transformation brought about by the new flyover bridges in that region,” he noted.

Aniagwu stressed that the current focus is not on political competition but on delivering value to the people of Delta State.

He urged that any assessment of Governor Oborevwori should be based on his actual achievements and how well he meets the commitments made to the citizens.

“While we recognize the necessity of political engagement, we are firmly committed to governance at this time. Governor Oborevwori remains dedicated to fulfilling his promises, and those achievements will resonate when the political season arrives,” he asserted.

Regarding project delays, Aniagwu attributed some of the challenges to rising costs of construction materials, which resulted from the removal of subsidies.

He explained, “When Governor Oborevwori took office, the prices of construction materials saw a significant increase. This situation has necessitated adjustments to many projects to ensure they remain viable and do not compromise the state’s interests.”

He conveyed the administration’s comprehensive approach to development, noting that it inherited around 370 road projects while also initiating new ones.

“Our development strategy ensures that every community has an equal opportunity to benefit from the governor’s plans,” he stated. While highlighting ongoing projects in the Warri area, Aniagwu also emphasized the importance of road developments within Asaba.

In addressing concerns about insecurity, Aniagwu called on parents to take an active role in the upbringing of their children, emphasizing that societal crime is often rooted in insufficient home training.

He underscored the significance of effective parenting in establishing a stable community free from crime.

Additionally, he expressed the need for a re-engineered educational curriculum that equips graduates with technical skills relevant to today’s job market.

He proudly noted that over 205,000 individuals have benefited from the Delta Cares Programme, which aims to empower people to become job creators rather than mere job seekers.

On the issue of public education, Aniagwu highlighted the ongoing extensive renovations of schools across the state and commended Governor Oborevwori for his commitment to improving educational infrastructure.

Abigborodo Community Challenges Sapele Okpe Leaders to Present Proof of Land Ownership

By Sunday Apah

The ongoing land dispute between the Abigborodo and Sapele Okpe communities has escalated, as the Abigborodo Community Management Committee demands that Sapele Okpe leaders provide substantial proof of land ownership.

In a stern response to statements made by Chief Onoriode Temiagin and other Sapele Okpe officials, Abigborodo leaders labeled the allegations against them as “false, misleading, and groundless.”

Tensions over the Ugbekoko land claim have heightened after Chief Temiagin accused leaders in Abigborodo, particularly Chief Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, of forgery, inciting violence, and falsely asserting host community status in the operations of SEPLAT Energy Plc.

He also suggested that the historical documents supporting Abigborodo’s claims were mere fabrications, alleging an encroachment by the Itsekiri community on Okpe ancestral territory.

In a prompt rebuttal, Abigborodo leaders affirmed the legitimacy of their claims, stating that their ownership of Ugbekoko is supported by verifiable legal and historical documents that trace back to the British colonial period.

They referenced a 1919 lease agreement, petitions from Chief Okonedo to the colonial authorities, and other official communications, all appropriately documented with the National Archives. “If Chief Temiagin believes our documents are fraudulent, we urge him to provide his own proof of ownership,” the statement asserted.

Moreover, Abigborodo leaders dismissed accusations surrounding the recent shooting of a Sapele Okpe citizen, Mr. Patrick Gageche, labeling it a calculated attempt to incite tensions and derail the investigation conducted by the Delta State Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Committee.

They described the allegations as a “deliberate distortion” intended to provoke public animosity toward Abigborodo while fostering an unnecessary climate of hostility.

The Abigborodo Community further accused Sapele Okpe leaders of instigating violence against their members. They claimed that youths from Sapele Okpe, allegedly acting under Chief Temiagin’s orders, set up illegal roadblocks along Ugberikoko Gana Road where they targeted and assaulted travelers of Itsekiri descent.

Specific individuals—including Solomon Ayiri Omamogho, Louis Atunu, and Stephen Abaje—were identified as having suffered injuries during these encounters, prompting Abigborodo leaders to call on law enforcement to swiftly ensure justice.

Additionally, Abigborodo leaders reminded the public that the state government is actively managing the ongoing dispute via a special conflict resolution committee led by Chief Edwin Uzor.

They noted their consistent engagement with legal channels, including petitions to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and outreach efforts to SEPLAT and relevant governmental bodies. “While these processes are underway, Chief Temiagin and others continue to propagate false narratives and instigate unrest,” the statement read.

The community also highlighted a meeting that took place on February 5, 2025, at the Delta State Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) headquarters in Asaba, where representatives from both communities pledged to adhere to the state government’s white paper.

The meeting yielded key commitments to peace and a promise to allow the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Committee to conduct its investigation without interference.

Despite these agreements, Abigborodo leaders accused Chief Temiagin of breaching the peace accord through ongoing inflammatory remarks in the media.

They warned that such actions could invoke defamation and cyberbullying laws, asserting, “Freedom of speech does not grant license to disseminate falsehoods. Chief Temiagin must be ready to substantiate his allegations in a court of law.”

As tensions rise, Abigborodo leaders have called for their community to remain composed and law-abiding, expressing their steadfast commitment to the rule of law and due process.

They urged law enforcement agencies to enhance surveillance to safeguard innocent civilians from further harm. “We advocate for peace and justice. The truth will ultimately emerge,” their statement concluded.

With both communities remaining steadfast in their claims, the land dispute continues to be a potential flashpoint in Delta State. Observers remain watchful as government-led peace initiatives unfold, hoping that dialogue and legal resolution will prevail over discord and confrontation.

“In line with this belief, I previously took steps to build confidence and address lingering concerns from the past before the government first intervened in the UUC leadership matter in October 2024.

“It is hoped that these steps would help bolster trust and unity in our Kingdom. In compliance with this recent directive, therefore, I have asked that all documents submitted on my behalf, including the nomination form purchased for this cause, be withdrawn.

“I extend my congratulations in advance to those who will emerge victorious in the forthcoming elections. I pledge my unwavering support to their administration, and I remain committed to contributing towards the growth and development of Udu Kingdom in whatever capacity I can.

In response, Olorogun Austin Emaduku expressed his gratitude for the support from the youth leaders. “I am truly humbled by your gesture,” he said.

He acknowledged the complexities of the electoral process and reflected on previous challenges, mentioning how he had received overwhelming support during his first attempt but faced crises before the Delta State Government intervened.

It would be a disappointment to you and many other well-meaning Udu indigenes if I chose not to run,” he added.

Emaduku emphasized his desire to be a candidate chosen by the people, not an imposed one. “I want to be a candidate who earns acceptance through the electoral process. As outlined in the electoral guidelines, everyone is free to contest. Hon. Peter Uviejitobor, as the chairman of the interim committee, has assured us that the election will be conducted fairly.”

Our kingdom stands to gain significantly from our collective strength and cooperation.”
