Six persons posing as pastors have been apprehended in connection with fraudulent “miracle” schemes targeting residents of Idanre community in Ondo State.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the six suspects on Thursday. According to a statement from the command’s spokesperson, Jimoh Kazeem, the men are identified as Fadahunsi, Kolade, Tijani, Iyanuoluwa, Arijesulola, and Ademola.
The arrests resulted from an intelligence-based operation carried out on February 16, 2026, by police tactical teams working alongside Community Safety Officers.
Authorities reported that the suspects organized deceptive schemes, presenting themselves as pastors and spiritual leaders. They staged fake miracles and religious interventions to win the trust of their targets.
Police investigations indicate that the group took advantage of the victims’ faith and personal struggles, offering false promises of divine help with financial, health, or other personal issues, only to swindle them through deceitful means.
The suspects reportedly worked in a coordinated manner, with each member playing a specific role to maintain an appearance of authenticity.
Investigations are continuing to determine the full extent of the fraud, identify all affected victims, and locate any remaining accomplices.
The suspects are currently detained and will be prosecuted once the investigation is complete.
The police have advised the public to remain vigilant and to verify the credibility of individuals who use religious or spiritual claims to solicit trust, warning that such tactics may conceal criminal intentions.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, called on political leaders to prioritize unity and set aside divisive sentiments during his address at the funeral service for Senator Peter Nwaoboshi.
The ceremony was held at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Ibusa on Friday.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized that Nigeria’s progress hinges on cooperation, mutual respect, and shared responsibility. Reflecting on Senator Nwaoboshi’s life and legacy, he reminded those in public office that leadership is a sacred duty, granted by both God and the people for the nation’s collective welfare.
“Power is fleeting and positions are temporary, but a legacy of genuine service endures,” Oborevwori stated. “This moment should inspire us to lead with humility, treat one another with respect, and remember that history will judge us not by our titles, but by the positive impact we make.”
He stressed that national development flourishes in an environment of peace and collaboration. “Unity brings strength, and cooperation drives progress. When we permit division to overshadow our common purpose, we undermine the moral foundation of our society. Nigeria must always remain our foremost priority,” he added.
The governor reassured citizens of Delta State that his administration remains dedicated to inclusive growth, accountable governance, and policies aimed at improving livelihoods.
Addressing the family of the late senator, Oborevwori said, “May his name continue to be a badge of honor for you. Let his legacy motivate you to pursue excellence, integrity, and patriotism. His service to Delta State and Nigeria will be remembered.”
Reflecting on the nature of life and service, the governor noted that true significance lies not in the length of one’s years, but in the depth of one’s contributions. “What truly matters is not how long we live, but how meaningfully we serve humanity and our nation,” he remarked.
He further observed that the gathering was not only an occasion to mourn but also to reflect on the kind of nation being built. “Senator Nwaoboshi’s life challenges us to value service over self-interest, unity over discord, and national good over personal ambition.”
Quoting John 11:25, Governor Oborevwori highlighted the Christian assurance of eternal life, encouraging Nigerians to find strength in faith during times of collective reflection. “We do not mourn without hope. We entrust our brother to God, confident in the promise of resurrection. As we honor him, let us also recommit to the principles he upheld: courage, true representation, and devotion to the people.”
He described Senator Nwaoboshi as a unifying figure and patriot whose work crossed political lines and reinforced democratic values in Nigeria. “He was more than a politician—he was a public servant and a steadfast believer in Nigeria’s unity and advancement. Indeed, the memory of the righteous remains a blessing,” the governor concluded.
In his homily, Very Rev. Fr. Peter Mobuogwu, Vicar-General of the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku, spoke on themes of hope, accountability, and divine justice. Referencing the exile of the Israelites, he reassured the congregation of God’s presence even in uncertain times. Citing the Book of Wisdom, he affirmed, “The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God.”
“Time belongs to God, not to us,” Fr. Mobuogwu said. “Let us live and serve in a manner that earns the divine commendation: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’”
The funeral service attracted a notable assembly of dignitaries, reflecting the late senator’s significant influence. Attendees included the governor’s wife, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori; Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme; former Senate President Senator Ahmad Lawan; former Governors James Ibori and Ifeanyi Okowa; former Deputy Senate President Senator Ovie Omo-Agege; former Deputy Governor Deacon Kingsley Otuaro; and several federal and state lawmakers.

The University of Delta, Agbor (UNIDEL), marked a historic milestone on Saturday as it held its first convocation ceremony, graduating 1,606 students—including 30 First-Class honorees—four years after its establishment.
During the event, Delta State Governor and University Visitor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, unveiled a series of incentives and policy measures designed to bolster academic distinction at the young institution.
The Governor announced a ₦5 million cash prize for the Best Graduating Student and ₦500,000 for each First-Class graduate, with funds to be disbursed promptly.
Governor Oborevwori also approved a proposal from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stella Chiemeke, to integrate the Mother and Child Hospital, General Hospital in Agbor, and the Diagnostic Centre in Owa-Alero into a University Teaching Hospital.
This move is seen as vital for securing full accreditation for UNIDEL’s medical programs. Also, he committed to providing a coaster bus to assist with the university’s transportation requirements.
Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, the Governor described the convocation as a turning point that represents not only the conferral of degrees but also the success of vision, determination, and focused leadership.
He emphasized that the founding of UNIDEL and other state universities—once questioned as a potential misallocation of resources—has been justified by rising enrolment and their positive socioeconomic influence.
“Today we celebrate a young institution that has progressed decisively from idea to reality,” Oborevwori stated. “Delta State now educates over 100,000 students in its tertiary institutions, fostering job growth, commerce, and service delivery on an unprecedented scale.”
He acknowledged former Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for his foresight in establishing the university and praised the Pro-Chancellor, Governing Council, management, senate, and staff for guiding UNIDEL into a rapidly emerging hub of learning.
Addressing the graduates, he encouraged them to be courageous, inventive, and persistent, and to actively forge their own opportunities.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stella Chiemeke reported that the university presented graduates from seven faculties across the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 sessions, all recognized for sound character and scholarly achievement. She noted that every graduate received their certificate and transcript on the day of the ceremony.
Prof. Chiemeke also highlighted institutional accomplishments under her leadership, such as full accreditation of all programs by the National Universities Commission, expanded international partnerships, upgraded facilities, improved security, and increasing global visibility.
She mentioned that roughly 4,000 students in need had benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund during the academic year.
Despite its recent founding, UNIDEL already ranks third in Nigeria for sustainability and places within the global 801–1000 range in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. More than 180 of its academics are listed in the 2026 AD Scientific Index.
The Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman, Emeritus Prof. Emmanuel A. C. Nwanze, characterized the convocation as both a celebration and a time for reflection, applauding the dedication of staff and students and commending the Vice-Chancellor for her dynamic and purposeful leadership.
Earlier in the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori was formally invested as Visitor to the University in accordance with its establishing laws and received a special recognition award alongside 17 other distinguished Nigerians.
