Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori, has officially appointed Prof. Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba as the new Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka.
In a statement issued by Dr. Kingsley Eze Emu, the Secretary to the State Government, it was announced that Prof. Asagba’s appointment will take effect on December 1, 2024.
Prof. Asagba, an expert in Environmental Biochemistry and Toxicology, has held various significant roles at the university, including Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration and Provost of the former Asaba Campus.
Justice A.N. Erhabor of the Edo State High Court has sentenced eight individuals to prison for their roles in internet fraud in Benin City.
Sources report that the defendants received varying prison terms for offenses including impersonation, fraud, and possession of fraudulent documents.
The individuals convicted are Akhigbe Andrew Okhaifoh, Collins Osagie, Wisdom Imaduerehie, Imade Destiny, Chibueze Onyeji, Edubi Favour, David Precious, and Michael Osas Iguma.
They were prosecuted by the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Each convict faced a distinct charge related to impersonation, obtaining by false pretenses, retaining proceeds from crime, and possessing fraudulent documents.
One notable charge against Collins Osagie stated: “On or about September 30, 2024, you had in your possession documents containing false pretenses that you knew or should have known were fraudulent.”
This violates Sections 6 and 8(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offenses Act 2006, punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.
All defendants admitted guilt to the charges. The prosecution, represented by I.M. Elodi, K.Y. Bello, Isa K. Agwai, A.A. Ibrahim Faisal, A.S. Bala-Ribah, and Ahmed Salihu, urged the court to impose a sentence.
In response, the defense requested leniency, citing the defendants’ remorse for their actions.
Justice Erhabor subsequently sentenced Okhaifoh, Imaduerehie, Osagie, Onyeji, Favour, Precious, and Destiny to two years in prison, each with an option to pay a ₦200,000 fine.
Michael Osas Iguma received a three-year sentence, also with a ₦200,000 fine option.
In addition, the convicts were ordered to forfeit their phones, laptops, and funds in their bank accounts to the federal government.
Collins Osagie additionally forfeited a 2007 Lexus RX 350, identified as a proceeding from his criminal activities.
These individuals were apprehended by the EFCC Benin Zonal Directorate due to their involvement in internet fraud.
They have since committed to exhibiting better behavior in the future.
The Ogun State Police Command has detained a 28-year-old woman, Ogunlana Yemisi, following accusations of assaulting her husband, Idowu Adebowale, 31, and inflicting a severe injury on him.
According to a statement from the police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the incident occurred during a minor disagreement early on October 15. Adebowale reported that his wife attacked him with a sharp object around 4:30 AM.
When officers arrived, they observed a significant injury to Adebowale’s genital area, which he claimed was caused by his wife.
“Upon receiving the report, detectives quickly responded to the scene and apprehended the suspect,” stated the police spokesperson.
While the wife denied the allegations during questioning, the gravity of the injury and the delay in seeking medical attention prompted police to provide Adebowale with a medical form and recommend he visit a hospital for treatment.
The suspect remains in custody, and the case will be forwarded to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta for further inquiry.
The police emphasized that this situation will be thoroughly investigated, as it raises serious concerns regarding domestic violence fueled by intense emotional distress.

Troops from the 63 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have apprehended four persons suspected of armed robbery, kidnapping, and gunrunning in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
In a statement issued by Major Emmanuel Onoja, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, on Sunday, October 20, 2024, it was reported that several firearms and ammunition were confiscated from the suspects.
According to the statement, “In a deliberate and sustained effort to rid the region of all forms of criminality, the gallant troops of the 63 Brigade, while on routine patrol at approximately 10:30 PM on Saturday, October 19, 2024, arrested four suspects.”
The individuals were apprehended in a tricycle, commonly known as Keke NAPEP, with registration number ASB 991 VC DELTA, near Nwanwolo Market behind Asaba Specialist Hospital.
The suspects have been identified as Mr. Abila Luka, Mr. Solomon Yaknam, Mr. Sunday Emma, and Mr. Haruna Garba.
They were en route to an undisclosed location for their illicit activities when intercepted.
“Items recovered from the suspects include one AK-47 rifle, one Beretta pistol, 32 rounds of 7.62MM special ammunition, one round of 9MM ammunition, two cartridges, one magazine, one battle axe, one crowbar, one cross-body bag, one school bag, three small phones, two Android phones, a wallet containing a Union Bank ATM card, $19 in U.S. dollars, and 30,650.00 Naira.”
The suspects are currently in custody for interrogation and further investigation.

He stated, “Following the warning about the impending floods, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori promptly established a comprehensive flood management committee led by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu.

“We have made provisions for mattresses, food, electricity, water, and medical assistance for those displaced. We urge them to relocate to the nearest camps.
“Additionally, we are making arrangements to ensure that school-aged children continue their education while in the camps.”
Comrade Emmanuel Sakpakpa, has expressed his deep sorrow over the death of his esteemed boss, Hon. Benson Omoko, a former councilor of the Ughelli South Local Government Council Legislative Arm.
Omoko who hails from Okwagbe-Inland community, Ukpedi Sub-clan, Ughievwen Kingdom, passed away on 14th October, 2024 in the United Kingdom after a prolonged battle with illness, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service and unwavering commitment to his people.
Sakpakpa conveyed his condolences during a recent visit to the widow and son (Obed Omoko) of the late councilor, who resides in Manchester, United Kingdom.

The National President of the Committee for Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), Comrade Dr. Kehinde Prince Taiga, has urged Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun to take decisive action against officers from the Nigeria Police Force deployed from Abuja.
These officers are accused of fatally shooting two police officers and three local youths amid an ongoing land dispute in the Okpanam area of Oshimili North Local Government Area in Delta State.
The land ownership conflict, which has persisted since 2021, dates back to when CP Ari Muhammed Ali, now an Assistant Inspector General, served as the Delta State Commissioner of Police.
The issue escalated recently as officers were sent from Abuja to intimidate members of the opposing faction, believed to be backed by a powerful cartel known for employing security forces to suppress legitimate land claimants.
Expressing deep concern over the lack of resolution despite numerous petitions submitted to IGP Egbetokun by legal representatives and civil society organizations, Taiga highlighted fears that these grievances may not be reaching the IGP’s attention.
In a statement released in Warri, Taiga called for the immediate prosecution of all involved police personnel, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the situation to prevent further violence in the community.
He also demanded the arrest of a key suspect in the land dispute, identified as Ogidi, known in surrounding areas for his role in multiple land grabbing incidents.
Taiga accused Ogidi of hiring police officers to harass and intimidate legitimate property owners, thereby preventing them from developing their lands.
He described the recent violence, which resulted in the deaths of two police officers and three local youths, as a direct consequence of this ongoing conflict.
He shared the harrowing experiences of local residents, including Mr. Chinedu Ifuani, who recounted his own ordeal with police allegedly acting on Ogidi’s orders. Ifuani detailed his wrongful arrest and the physical abuse he endured, asserting that Ogidi has consistently manipulated law enforcement to intimidate community members.

The CDHR is calling on the IGP to ensure a thorough investigation into the killings and the ongoing crisis in Okpanam, urging immediate action to restore safety and justice for the community members affected by these violent land disputes.
The Bilabiri Community, located in the Mein Kingdom of the Ekeremor Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, has reaffirmed its ban on Mr. Lucky Tubotu due to his ongoing dissemination of false information claiming that the community is in a state of anarchy.
This decision was announced in a press statement issued following the community’s general meeting, signed by HRH Soja Dede, Abiodun Commander (Deputy Highness), High Chief Friday Gelu, High Chief Esau Olumofa, Mr. Douglas Aaron (Youth President), Pastor Ebike Adam (CDC General Secretary), and Mrs. Ebitei Lucky (Women Leader).
According to the statement, “Mr. Lucky Tubotu poses a threat to our community with his ulterior motives, as he continues to falsely assert that Bilabiri Mein Kingdom, under Ekeremor Local Government Area, is in a state of chaos. This misinformation is not only inaccurate but has the potential to harm our community significantly.
“Consequently, Mr. Tubotu remains banned from entering Bilabiri Community, a decision unanimously agreed upon by community members, including Chiefs, women, and youth representatives, on September 28, 2024.
“The rampant spread of such false information, aimed at misleading the Federal Government under Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Bayelsa State Government under Senator Douye Diri, security agencies, and the public, is a serious offense. We urge the public to disregard the malicious claims of this internal adversary.
“The regrettable intra-community crisis that resulted in the tragic loss of our esteemed son, Gen. Frank Seidei, led us to employ traditional conflict resolution methods to restore harmony among families and the peace-loving people of Bilabiri. High Chief Government Ekemupolo, the custodian of Ijaw culture and tradition, has been instrumental in this process.
“Since the implementation of these practices, Bilabiri has enjoyed peace, and certain laws have been established in line with best practices.
“The ban on Lucky Tubotu was reaffirmed because he has falsely alleged that Ebimene Abaka removed Yerin Johnbo as the Tantita coordinator with the intention of assuming that role himself. It is important to clarify that Ebimene Abaka is not responsible for this removal; it was a unanimous decision by the community.
“We advise the public not to take Mr. Tubotu’s fabricated claims seriously, as he may face arrest by security agents soon.
“Regarding the expiration of the CDC Chairman and its executives’ tenure in December 2024, it should be noted that Mr. Tubotu is no longer recognized as a member of the Bilabiri community, having been ostracized by community consensus.
“Therefore, we advise him to refrain from involving himself in community matters. Furthermore, no specific date has been set for any changes in the CDC chairman and executives’ tenure.
“Mr. Lucky Tubotu, your threats to visit Bilabiri Community with armed men and to unleash mayhem on Ebimene Abaka and his family will not be taken lightly. If any such incidents occur, we will hold you and your associates responsible.”
