Urhobo Youth Leaders Condemn Detention of Okowa by EFCC, Call for His Immediate Release

The Urhobo Youth Leaders Association has strongly condemned what they termed as ‘illegal detention’ of former Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), characterizing it as an act of political witch hunt.

In a press statement signed by Urhobo youth leaders Association National President, Olorogun Amb. Samuel Oghotomo and the UYLA Secretary General, Olorogun Dr. Augustine Atiti, the association emphasized that Okowa’s eight years in office brought significant development to Urhobo and the state as a whole.

The statement asserted, “Okowa stood for equity and managed state finances prudently. His exemplary leadership and support for his successor are the reasons Delta State is currently experiencing masive rapid and extensive developmental transformations.”

“We believe that his recent detention by the EFCC is orchestrated by political adversaries whose aim is to silence him ahead of the 2027 elections. As elections approach, political actors often fabricate allegations against their perceived opponents.”

“Okowa left office nearly two years ago; why are these unfounded embezzlement allegations surfacing now? This is a strategy by the opposition party, both at the state and national levels, to witch-hunt and destabilize the Delta State PDP and clear a path for their own interests in 2027.”

It is customary for public officials to be called upon to clarify their actions during their tenure. Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, being an honorable and law-abiding citizen, traveled from Europe to Port Harcourt to honor the EFCC’s invitation, demonstrating his commitment to transparency and integrity.

“The APC cabal behind this invitation should focus on apprehending their members in Kogi who have evaded arrest, rather than pursuing Okowa, who voluntarily responded to the anti-graft body’s invitation. No amount of APC intimidation will sway Okowa.”

The Urhobo Youth Leaders Association urges the EFCC to resist being manipulated by unscrupulous politicians intent on witch-hunting those who have committed no wrongdoing, and to refrain from frivolous allegations and media character assassination campaigns.

The association warns that the EFCC must operate within the bounds of the law. Any attempt to twist the law to humiliate and intimidate Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa will be met with strong resistance from the people of Delta State.

Delta State to Generate 50,000 Jobs Through Special Agricultural Economic Zones, Says Governor Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, announced on Tuesday that his administration plans to harness the transformative potential of Special Agricultural Economic Zones to create over 50,000 jobs, aimed at enhancing the well-being and economic prosperity of the state’s residents.

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that this initiative would not only bolster food security and agro-processing but also stimulate employment, increase export earnings, and drive infrastructural development, ultimately benefiting the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Governor made this known during a meeting at Government House in Asaba with officials from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and the National Cereal Research Institute (NCRI), led by Dr. Chuma Ezedinma.

He expressed gratitude to the delegation for selecting Delta State as one of the successful candidates for the program, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to ensuring its success.

“I welcome you all on this final mission to assess our readiness for the establishment and implementation of the Transformational Integrated Special Agricultural Processing Zone, for which Delta State has been shortlisted for the second phase,” he stated.

Governor Oborevwori highlighted Delta’s rich agricultural land, suitable for cultivating palm fruits, cassava, maize, yams, plantains, and various vegetables, asserting that the Special Agricultural Processing Zone would be a strategic and successful addition to the state’s agricultural landscape.

“The Special Agricultural Processing Zone is vital to our strategy for transforming and strengthening Delta’s agricultural ecosystem,” he added. “We aim to attract, engage, and certify farms and agro value chains to the highest standards, utilizing the African Development Bank’s framework.”

He also expressed hope for continued support from the bank to bring the project to fruition, pledging that his government would fulfill all necessary requirements to realize this vision.

Dr. Ezedinma, meanwhile, commended Delta State for its innovative Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) model, which he described as unique and a benchmark for others.

“Delta State has established an Economic Zone Management Company tasked with overseeing the industrial zones. The state’s Public Private Partnership approach aligns with the bank’s objectives, and we look forward to seeing this model facilitate the development of these industrial zones, with the state taking the lead in providing a conducive environment while the bank offers catalytic financing,” he said.

Additionally, Pastor Godwin Akpovie, Managing Director and CEO of the Delta State Free Trade Zone, noted that initiatives such as the Free Trade Zone Operations Centre in Kwale and the Osubi Agro Transformation Centre, among others in Isoko and Agbor, are projected to generate over 50,000 jobs for the people of Delta State.

The South-South Professional & Transparency Initiatives (SSPTI) has expressed serious concern over what it perceives as a coordinated effort by select foreign media outlets, in collaboration with INTERPOL, to portray Nigeria as a global leader in criminal activity, particularly in cybercrime and other social issues.

In light of this situation, the group is urging the Nigerian government, particularly the ministries of foreign affairs and diplomatic relations, to address and rectify this misleading narrative that aims to undermine the country’s standing on the international stage.

The alarm was raised following a recent publication by U.S. researcher Matthew La Lime, which inaccurately labeled a non-existent group, ‘The Black Axe Confraternity,’ as one of the most criminally active and violent organizations worldwide. The SSPTI has condemned these claims as defamatory, baseless, and biased.

In a statement released on October 29, 2024, by Dr. Ugochukwu Alozie (Chairman) and Engr. Kayode Ayomide (Secretary), the organization criticized the report as lacking credibility.

They noted that La Lime, who published his findings through the Africa Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., failed to provide any verifiable evidence or names of individuals linked to these alleged crimes.

The SSPTI is calling on international partners and potential investors to disregard this report, which they believe is a misguided attempt by the researcher to tarnish Nigeria’s reputation. They emphasize that the publication is devoid of factual support.

“Our attention has been drawn to a publication dated October 29, 2024, authored by Matthew La Lime, which has circulated widely. We want to firmly state that this publication appears to be a product of the author’s imagination,” the statement reads.

They further assert that the publication lacks the essential elements of an objective and balanced report, indicating that La Lime acted unprofessionally in pursuit of profit and fame.

The SSPTI added, “It is important to clarify that the group he attributes these crimes to, The Black Axe Confraternity, is fictional and has not existed for some time. Therefore, it cannot be held responsible for the activities he claims.”

They also defended the capabilities of Nigerian law enforcement, stating, “Our country is proud of having one of the most effective security forces on the continent. The Nigeria Police Force is recognized for its efforts in combating crime, particularly cybercrime.”

The organization expressed disappointment that a respected institution like the Africa Center for Strategic Studies would allow an unqualified researcher to publish such unsubstantiated and damaging claims.

“We reaffirm our commitment to protect our nation’s integrity and will resist any foreign media attempts to undermine our security agencies by misrepresenting the level of violence and crime in Nigeria to the international community,” they stated.

In conclusion, the SSPTI called on the Nigerian government to investigate those responsible for this negative narrative and hold them accountable under international law for their efforts to defame the country.

CDHR Appeals to IGP Egbetokun to Reevaluate Police Escort Assignments

Comrade (Dr) Kehinde Prince Taiga, the National President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), has raised alarms regarding the backgrounds of individuals being assigned police escorts.

He has called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun to initiate a thorough vetting process for anyone granted police protection.

In light of recent incidents where individuals with known criminal histories have been spotted accompanied by police escorts, Taiga emphasized the need for a reassessment of this practice to ensure it aligns with the values of a reputable society.

He pointed out that it is unreasonable for a nation struggling with a shortage of security personnel to allocate police escorts to less significant individuals.

Taiga argued that halting this inappropriate allocation would be beneficial for the public, who are increasingly vulnerable in today’s environment.

In a statement released to the press in Warri, Taiga expressed dismay that notorious figures such as scammers, money launderers, and land encroachers are seen displaying police escorts, sometimes even using them to intimidate those with whom they have disputes, whether in police stations or courts.

“Our recent survey of individuals with police escorts revealed that many have acquired their wealth through dubious means,” Taiga noted.

“These individuals leverage their ill-gotten gains to secure police protection, enabling them to commit further offenses and exert pressure on those they consider adversaries.”

Taiga urged IGP Egbetokun to promptly begin profiling individuals currently assigned police escorts to remove protections from those who do not warrant them, for the greater good of society.

“We cannot lament the lack of adequate security personnel to address rampant crime while simultaneously assigning these valuable resources to individuals who do not deserve them, leaving the general populace vulnerable,” he stated.

The CDHR also criticized the police and judiciary for favoring wealth over justice in both criminal and civil cases. They highlighted a disturbing trend where law enforcement and judicial officials often favor the affluent, even in instances where they are the alleged offenders.

“We have observed how this damaging trend allows the police and the judiciary to favor the wealthy at the expense of the poor, even when guilt has been established,” Taiga asserted. “We say enough is enough when it comes to this miscarriage of justice.”

Taiga called upon the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to implement necessary reforms in the judicial system to eliminate corruption and ensure justice is served fairly, restoring trust among citizens.

As the holiday season approaches, the CDHR also appealed to IGP Egbetokun to issue a directive against professional misconduct among police officers, especially during this time when they might resort to unethical practices in pursuit of quick financial gains for holiday celebrations.

Taiga emphasized that a plea for integrity from law enforcement during the festive season is essential, as the public typically bears the brunt of any misconduct. He warned that exploiting desperation in the current challenging economic climate could lead to further issues down the line.

Delta Community Land Dispute: SSPTI Challenges Okpanam’s Claims of Ownership

The South-South Professional & Transparency Initiatives (SSPTI) is cautioning the public against engaging in any land transactions involving the Okpanam community in Oshimili North Local Government Area, asserting that the disputed land rightfully belongs to the Issele-Azagba people from the Aniocha North Council Area of Delta State.

In a statement released in Warri, the organization shared insights from its investigation into the ongoing land dispute, highlighting the recent public outcry following the tragic killings of three young individuals and two police officers three years prior.

The SSPTI indicated that a small faction of Okpanam locals appears to be responsible for the unrest affecting the region.

SSPTI representatives, Dr. Ugochukwu Alozie (Chairman) and Engr. Kayode Ayomide (Secretary), criticized attempts by some members of the Okpanam community to discredit a law-abiding businessman, Chinedu Okeke, also known as “Ekwe Ogidi.”

They argued that the Okpanam proponents have not substantiated their ownership claims against the Issele-Azagba community.

The group also brought to light concerns regarding certain senior police officials in Delta State, particularly recent appointees to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who allegedly collaborate with criminal elements in Okpanam to exacerbate tensions.

According to SSPTI, these officers have been known to influence successive Commissioners of Police to side with them, thereby oppressing the Issele-Azagba community.

The SSPTI expressed gratitude to Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun for assigning the case to Deputy Inspector General of Police Sylvester Abiodun Alabi and voiced confidence in his investigative capabilities.

They urged Okpanam community members to come forward with their statements to the police, which had been requested two months ago.

In part, the statement read: “Our group has become aware of the ongoing land conflict between the Issele-Azagba and Okpanam communities, which has resulted in the loss of five lives and significant property destruction, amounting to millions of Naira.”

“As an organization committed to promoting transparency regarding issues affecting public safety in the Niger Delta, we conducted an independent investigation into the land disagreement to uncover the truth and help put an end to the unnecessary violence and property damage affecting law-abiding citizens.”

The findings indicated that, contrary to claims of land grabbing by certain individuals from Okpanam, including one Chiedu Ofuani, the situation involves encroachment by a few individuals against the Issele-Azagba community, who have convincingly demonstrated their rightful ownership.

The investigation uncovered a valid Consent Judgment issued by the High Court of Justice in Issele-Uku on June 19, 2012, confirming the Issele-Azagba people’s ownership claims. This judgment was supported by representatives from both communities and remains uncontested.

Additionally, the Issele-Azagba community possesses a legally binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Okpanam community that recognizes their ownership of the disputed land, as well as an established survey plan clearly outlining the boundaries of both communities.

In contrast, the Okpanam community has only presented an Enrollment of Ruling from the same High Court, which allows them to access the land for surveying but does not invalidate the existing Consent Judgment favoring the Issele-Azagba people.

Furthermore, the investigation revealed that Chinedu Okeke, whom the Okpanam community labeled a land grabber, is a legitimate business owner.

He acquired approximately 85 acres of land from the Issele-Azagba community, fulfilling all financial obligations and conducting thorough due diligence regarding the land’s rightful ownership.

The SSPTI expressed concern regarding certain high-ranking police officials who have operated through multiple police administrations, as some seem to support criminal elements in Okpanam with the aim of suppressing the Issele-Azagba community’s rights.

The group commended the Inspector General of Police for entrusting the investigation to DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi but also noted that some members of the Okpanam community have refrained from going to Abuja to present their statements, despite the two-month timeline since investigations began.

Concluding their statement, SSPTI urged the public to avoid dealings with the Okpanam community concerning the disputed land, citing their desperation to exploit individuals and their lack of legitimate ownership claims.

Onanuga noted that Major General Oluyede will fulfill the duties of COAS until the return of the substantive Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who is currently receiving treatment overseas.

In the official statement, it was confirmed: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has appointed Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
