Bilabiri Community Reaffirms Ban on Alleged Rumor Spreader Lucky Tubotu

0

By Sunday Apah

The Bilabiri Community, located in the Mein Kingdom of the Ekeremor Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, has reaffirmed its ban on Mr. Lucky Tubotu due to his ongoing dissemination of false information claiming that the community is in a state of anarchy.

This decision was announced in a press statement issued following the community’s general meeting, signed by HRH Soja Dede, Abiodun Commander (Deputy Highness), High Chief Friday Gelu, High Chief Esau Olumofa, Mr. Douglas Aaron (Youth President), Pastor Ebike Adam (CDC General Secretary), and Mrs. Ebitei Lucky (Women Leader).

According to the statement, “Mr. Lucky Tubotu poses a threat to our community with his ulterior motives, as he continues to falsely assert that Bilabiri Mein Kingdom, under Ekeremor Local Government Area, is in a state of chaos. This misinformation is not only inaccurate but has the potential to harm our community significantly.

“Consequently, Mr. Tubotu remains banned from entering Bilabiri Community, a decision unanimously agreed upon by community members, including Chiefs, women, and youth representatives, on September 28, 2024.

“The rampant spread of such false information, aimed at misleading the Federal Government under Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Bayelsa State Government under Senator Douye Diri, security agencies, and the public, is a serious offense. We urge the public to disregard the malicious claims of this internal adversary.

“The regrettable intra-community crisis that resulted in the tragic loss of our esteemed son, Gen. Frank Seidei, led us to employ traditional conflict resolution methods to restore harmony among families and the peace-loving people of Bilabiri. High Chief Government Ekemupolo, the custodian of Ijaw culture and tradition, has been instrumental in this process.

“Since the implementation of these practices, Bilabiri has enjoyed peace, and certain laws have been established in line with best practices.

“The ban on Lucky Tubotu was reaffirmed because he has falsely alleged that Ebimene Abaka removed Yerin Johnbo as the Tantita coordinator with the intention of assuming that role himself. It is important to clarify that Ebimene Abaka is not responsible for this removal; it was a unanimous decision by the community.

“We advise the public not to take Mr. Tubotu’s fabricated claims seriously, as he may face arrest by security agents soon.

“Regarding the expiration of the CDC Chairman and its executives’ tenure in December 2024, it should be noted that Mr. Tubotu is no longer recognized as a member of the Bilabiri community, having been ostracized by community consensus.

“Therefore, we advise him to refrain from involving himself in community matters. Furthermore, no specific date has been set for any changes in the CDC chairman and executives’ tenure.

“Mr. Lucky Tubotu, your threats to visit Bilabiri Community with armed men and to unleash mayhem on Ebimene Abaka and his family will not be taken lightly. If any such incidents occur, we will hold you and your associates responsible.”

This statement reaffirms the community’s commitment to peace and the safety of its members.

Delta Governor Approves Immediate Implementation of New Minimum Wage

0

By Sunday Apah

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has given the green light for the immediate payment of the new minimum wage to state workers, effective October.

This announcement was made by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, during a recent meeting with the leadership of organized labor in Delta, including representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC). The gathering focused on the implementation of the minimum wage.

Dr. Emu explained that the meeting followed Governor Oborevwori’s directive to commence payments beginning this month. He stated, “The minimum wage committee previously agreed on holding off payments until we received the chart from the National Income Salaries and Wages Commission. Now that we have obtained the chart, we have conducted thorough reviews of the consequential adjustments and their impacts on our financial planning.”

He added, “While we are still assessing all aspects of these adjustments and their future implications for the state’s cash flow, the Governor has instructed us to proceed with payments. His commitment to the welfare of the people shines through, as he is truly a labor-friendly leader.”

In response, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, praised Governor Oborevwori for his swift approval of the new wage. He noted, “The labor movement in Delta State expresses its gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for facilitating the implementation of the 2024 minimum wage without complications.”

Ofobruku acknowledged that the Governor had previously assured labor representatives that payments would be made once the necessary guidelines were issued, dismissing notions that such assurances were merely political rhetoric. He concluded, “We are thankful for the Governor’s decisive action and look forward to addressing any discrepancies as they arise.”

The Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, has affirmed that his administration is committed to fostering comprehensive development for the residents of the Local Government Area.

Egbo made this declaration during an address to members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ughelli Correspondents Chapel, who visited his office at the council secretariat.

He emphasized that in his few months in office, he has concentrated on three key areas: education, the environment, and security, while also enhancing professional development and promoting transparency.

“We have established regular communication channels to ensure that all members of the local government area are informed and engaged,” he stated.

“Every Monday, we hold prayers to entrust our administration to the guidance of God.”

Upon taking office, Egbo recognized the critical importance of healthcare and, along with his team, embarked on a tour of health centers in the area.

This on-the-spot assessment revealed the poor condition of some facilities, prompting his administration to take decisive action by beginning the construction of an ultra-modern maternity health center equipped with state-of-the-art facilities at the Local Government Headquarters.

Regarding education, he noted, “Improving primary school education is vital for the future of our youth. Therefore, we have proposed funding for enhanced facilities, collaborating with SUPEB for teacher training, and creating a conducive learning environment for our pupils.”

“As a government, in just 100 days of my tenure, we have successfully saved over N25,000,000 (Twenty-Five Million Naira) from our internally generated revenue — primarily through initiatives like the Local Government Identification Certificate, Birth Registration Certificate, and Marriage Registration.

“This funding has already been allocated for purchasing school uniforms, notebooks, and writing desks for our pupils in the Local Government Area.”

Addressing insecurity, which he noted was rampant before he assumed office, Egbo convened a Zonal Security Meeting that included his neighboring councils of Ughelli South and Udu.

This collaborative effort has resulted in a relative peace that the community has been enjoying, though he expressed concern over a recent tragic incident in which the newly posted Divisional Police Officer for Agbarbo Division was murdered by criminals.

“I would like to express that I inherited offices in a very poor condition and have taken immediate steps to renovate the Chairman’s office, the Vice Chairman’s office, and the office of the Leader of the Legislative Arm to create a conducive working environment.”

“I have also instructed the Head of the Works Department to prepare a Bill of Quantity for the complete renovation and furnishing of other offices.”

“In addition, we have procured official vehicles for the offices of the Vice Chairman, Leader of the 8th Assembly, Secretary to the Local Government, Head of Personnel Management, and a Toyota Hiace bus for the Press Crew.”

Acknowledging the dire state of local roads, Egbo shared that he met with the amiable Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who has promised to consider their proposal for the approval of funds to repair 20 kilometers of roads in the upcoming budget.

“On environmental sanitation, those of us living in the metropolis can attest to my administration’s efforts to clean up Ughelli North.

“The Ughelli main market, once a chaotic scene with vendors selling goats along the road, has been transformed.

“The vendors have now been relocated inside the market, and the debris has been cleared. Our commitment to cleaning Ughelli is an ongoing priority.”

In response, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ughelli Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Sunday Apah, commended Olorogun Jaro Egbo for his achievements as Chairman.

“In just a few months in office, you have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the welfare of our community,” he stated.

“Your initiatives in health, your procurement of vehicles for our political leaders, and your focus on enhancing our security measures align with the pressing needs of our citizens.”

“Moreover, your emphasis on verifying news and collaborating with journalists highlights your understanding of the crucial role communication plays in governance.”

“We are particularly grateful for your recognition and decision to appoint one of our own as an eye to us and part of your administration.

“This decision not only underscores your commitment to inclusivity but also strengthens the bond between our local government and the journalism community in Ughelli North.”

“With your leadership and focus on collaboration, we believe our partnership can yield significant benefits for both the local government and the broader community.”

Oborevwori’s indelible footprints in Delta

0

By Festus Ahon

When Sheriff Oborevwori assumed office as Governor of Delta State on May 29, 2023, he assured Deltans of his commitment to advancing the state’s development, building on the achievements of his predecessors. Since then, he has worked tirelessly, with landmark projects spread across the state.

In nearly every local government and senatorial district, Oborevwori has initiated or completed signature projects. During his inaugural address, he emphasized his focus on restoring Warri, the “Oil City,” to its former glory. The twin cities of Warri and Effurun, along with their environs, have long suffered from infrastructural decay and frequent flooding.

Oborevwori has remained steadfast in his efforts to revitalize these cities through urban renewal initiatives and the construction of new infrastructure. Numerous roads in Warri have been transformed, including the completed Upper and Lower Erejuwa Roads, Gabriel Mabiaku Road, and Esisi Road to Estate Roundabout, with a spur to Nana College connecting Ajamimogha.

The immediate past administration had awarded the rehabilitation of the Warri Township Stadium. After visiting the project site twice, Governor Oborevwori determined that the contractors lacked the capacity to meet the project specifications. As a result, he reassigned the project to construction giant Julius Berger Plc for its timely and effective completion.

Another project of immense value is the Trans-Warri Road and bridges which Governor Oborevwori and his Royal Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, the Olu of Warri Kingdom drove through to Ode-Itsekiri, the traditional headquarters of the Iwere nation for the first time.

In the Isoko nation, Governor Oborevwori has not disappointed the people with the completion and inauguration of some projects at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro. During his first 100 days in office, Governor Oborevwori inaugurated the completed Administrative building, living quarters for the University’s principal officers as well as internal roads in the University.

Just recently at the inauguration of Emevor-Orogun Road Phase 1, Governor Oborevwori announced the award of contract for the construction of the College Health Sciences building at the University. Aside from the University, the Governor also recently approved the establishment of the College of Health Technology, Ovrode in Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

Other projects included the completion of Enwhe-Olomoro Road; Enhwe Internal Roads; Ongoing Enhwe – Uwheru Road, reconstruction of 24km Isoko ring Road from Ellu, Ovrode, Ofagbe, Orie-Irri, Okpe-Isoko, Uro-Irri and Ada-Irri road in Isoko North and Isoko South Local Government Areas.

It is also worthy to note that work has reached an advanced stage on the completion of the Isoko section of the Ughelli-Asaba Expressway. Governor Oborevwori has ensured that the project goes on uninhibited by making prompt payments for the contractors to remain on site all year round.

At a recent State Executive Council meeting held in August, the
construction of Olomoro-Igbide Road; construction of Emevor-Ivrogbo-Orogun Road Phase 2; and the construction of Otekpo Road in Ellu, Isoko North were also approved.

Other projects are completed remedial works for the failed approach to the bridge at Bedesegba along Ohoror-Bomadi Road in Bomadi Local Government Area. Exco also approved the reconstruction of Ohoror-Bomadi Road; Ekeye-Ovedhe close in Okumagba Layout, Warri, internal roads and drains in Kurutie, Obitobon-Elolo-Ajaokurogbo-Orubu Road Phase 2, Ogidigben; Kurutie internal roads Phase 2; Rehabilitation of Odimodi, Ogulagha road in Burutu Local Government Area and the construction of rigid concrete pavement of Stadium Road, Ugborodo in Warri South-West Local Government Area.

Governor Oborevwori’s accomplishments are also evident in Delta Central Senatorial District, particularly through the ongoing flyover bridges and road expansion projects undertaken by construction giants, Julius Berger.

In Sapele metropolis, over 16 kilometers of roads construction with drainages are in progress to revitalize the town. These projects include; the reconstruction of Major Bowen Road from Okpe Road to New Ogorode Road, the construction of Benin Road from Green Egbedi Road at Olympia to Abeke Road, and the construction of Uko Road from Benin Road through Otuedor Road to Ugberikoko Road. Other projects include; the construction of Obule School Road from Orodje Grammar School to Okirigbagha by the Okirigwe Police Station, Alegbe Road from Abeke Road to New Ogorode Road, and the extension of Hausa Road from Ogodo Road to Commercial Avenue, among others.

Additional rehabilitation efforts in Sapele include; the Old Sapele-Warri Road from Amukpe Junction to Ikwewu Community, with a spur to Austin Ayemidejor Close, and the overlay of Okirighwre-Benin Road from Sapele-Warri Road to Gammon Bridge. Roads such as Orhorhor, Chechester, and Benjamin Oseregbaje are also being reconstructed.

Despite these significant infrastructural strides, a skit maker’s protest over road conditions in his area recently drew attention to Sapele for the wrong reasons. While it is his right to protest and demand government intervention, it was unfortunate that some bloggers falsely linked Governor Oborevwori and the state government to his alleged arrest. The Oborevwori administration values public feedback and firmly opposes any attempt to silence dissent. Therefore, the administration categorically dissociates itself from the skit maker’s arrest and any related actions.

In Ughelli North, the Oborevwori administration approved the construction of several new roads to alleviate traffic congestion at the popular Otovwodo junction. These projects include the construction of Uduere Road, Okogbe Road, Oyakemeagbegha Street, Ohre Street, and Edo Road. Additionally, the Okan Junction to Agbarho road received attention to ease traffic around the PTI Junction, Effurun Roundabout, and DSC Roundabout, with flyover construction underway.

In Okpe, some roads have been completed while some others are at completion stage, including the dualization of Ezesi Road in Orerokpe, Orerokpe-Okulohor-Oviri Road, Ugolo Road, and Ohorhe-Adagbrasa-Ugolo Road.

In Delta North Senatorial District, Isheagu-Ewulu Road and Bridge, the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, which is resplendent of Oborevwori’s midas touch, remains a testament to the Governor’s determination to do MORE.

Similarly, the multi billion Naira Kwale-Beneku bridge linking Ndokwa West and Ndokwa East LGAs has continued with accelerated pace since Governor Oborevwori took over office, such that it is about 99 percent completed to the delight and appreciation of adjoining communities who will no longer commute by canoe, boat or pontoon.

It must further be pointed out that Governor Oborevwori inaugurated a chain of connecting roads in Asaba, as part of activities marking his 100 days in office. The roads, 29 in all, with drainages on both sides, though started by Senator Okowa, were completed by Oborevwori, including the strategic road leading to the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council.

Also, Rt Hon Oborevwori was in the campuses of Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai to inaugurate multiple projects, including ultra modern auditoriums and lecture theaters as part of his 100 days in office. Management and students of the institution attest to the Governor’s empathy and concern for their welfare.

The administration recently completed the Ugbolu Onwuka road and Ogbotobor Avenue in Oshimili South local government, while rehabilitation of Gerald Onianwa Crescent, Odigwe Juwah Avenue, Ify Okeke Street, Nkem Okwuofu Street, Victor Anene Street and MBA Road all in Asaba are in progress. The High Court building complex in Asaba has also been completed and inaugurated under the watch of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The Governor has also approved award of contract for the construction of Okey and Iyke Oputa Street, Aboh in Ndokwa East, Issele-Azagba-Otulu Road in Aniocha North and South LGAs, projects which are meant to transform the outlook of those areas.

At the last State Executive Council meeting, Exco approved the building of a College of Medical Sciences at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, (DSUST) Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

The construction of internal roads at the Headquarters of the 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ibusa, in Oshimili North Local Government Area, construction of Aziken Avenue, DDPA Low Cost Housing Estate, Boji-Boji, Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area also got Exco’s approval.

Exco also approved the construction of Utagba-Uno/Ndemili Road phase 1, and Eweshi – Utagba-Uno Road, both in Ndokwa West Local Government Area. Construction of the main access road to the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun; construction of Sokoh Estate Road and Okito Street, Off Airport Road, Effurun, in Uwvie Local Government Area; the construction of internal roads in Kiagbodo phase 1, and the rehabilitation of Odimodi/Okonto/Ogulaha Road, both in Burutu Local Government Area.”

Similarly, Exco also approved the construction of Odoziobodo/Aninta Street, off Ezenei Avenue, Oshimili South LGA, rehabilitation of Ekakpamre/Ekrokpe/Usiefrun and Orhuwhorun Road in Ughelli South and Udu Local Government Areas, and the construction of Bezi Road, off College Road in Aladja in Udu Local Government Area.

Others include; construction of Uduophori Secondary Commercial School Road in Patani Local Government Area, construction of Ofuegbe Street, Amai in Ukwuani Local Government Area; construction of Oloma/Eyewuoma internal roads at Koko beach and the construction of Ogbogudu community road in Egbema, Warri North Local Government Area.

In just 16 months in office, Governor Oborevwori has continued to work in all parts of the state, leaving indelible footprints of his administration’s sagacity in the sands of time and one can only imagine what his achievements would look like when he rounds off his first term in office in 2027.

*Encourages Students to Embrace Learning

By Sunday Apah

On Thursday, the 1990 graduating class of Abbi Grammar School, known as the Unique Nobles 90 Association, generously donated educational materials valued at over one million naira to their former school and Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Delta State.

This donation, which comprised textbooks, notebooks, chalk, and various learning materials, exemplifies the group’s dedication to enhancing education in their community.

During a formal presentation ceremony, Nobles 90 Chairman, Comrade Shedrack Onitsha addressed the students, underscoring the vital role that education plays in achieving success.

He asserted that education is not a “scam” as some may claim, saying, “Education is a powerful equalizer in society. We urge you to appreciate its significance as you shape your future.”

Notable members of the Abbi Grammar School Old-Students Association (AGOSA), including Barr. Nelson Okuzor and Sir Godsday Owetemu, attended the event and expressed their admiration for Nobles 90’s commitment to the school’s development.

They encouraged other graduating classes to engage in similar initiatives to help elevate the school.

Sir Godsday Owetemu, the home-based chairman of AGOSA, praised Nobles 90’s charitable actions and called on fellow alumni to emulate their example, highlighting the reality that “the government cannot fulfill all the educational needs of our schools.”

Accompanying the chairperson were other members of Nobles 90, including Vice Chair Ogbuefi Ibobo Godfrey, former Chair Mr. Samuel Obije, Assistant Secretary Mrs. Gladys Oshilimi, Assistant Financial Secretary Mr. Ugwu Ikechukwu, PRO Mr. Nelson Onyinobode, and members Mrs. Faith Owetem, Ineh Chukudi, and Ndidi Smart.

The donation featured the latest editions of Mathematics, English, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry textbooks for Senior Secondary School 3 and Junior Secondary School 3, along with branded notebooks and writing materials.

Additionally, thirty-five JSS3 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds received individual copies of Mathematics and English textbooks to support their studies.

Reflecting on his own experiences at Abbi Grammar School, Onitsha remarked, “When we began in 1984, the resilience and determination we cultivated here empowered us to achieve success in various fields.

“Our class has produced two professors and numerous PhD holders, alongside many successful business owners and professionals.”

He encouraged the students to prioritize their education and recognize it as the cornerstone of future achievement.

The association also pledged ongoing support to students, including covering WAEC and JAMB fees for top performers to inspire academic excellence.

“Utilize the resources in the library and let your commitment to learning shine through,” Onitsha urged.

At Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, educational materials were presented to the top ten JSS3 students, and branded notebooks were distributed to JSS1 and JSS2 students.

Both school principals expressed their heartfelt gratitude. Mr. Monday Oshilim, Principal of Abbi Grammar School, praised the alumni for their generosity and stated, “It is truly inspiring that, years after graduation, this group continues to recognize the importance of supporting local education.

“These textbooks are invaluable to our students and the school library.”

Mr. Ogume Gabriel, Vice Principal of Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the vital role of alumni contributions in advancing education.

“We appreciate this exceptional association for reaching out to Abbi Girls and extending support to our school, despite their own educational roots in Abbi Grammar School.”

Both principals also called for increased support from both the government and alumni to provide essential resources like desks and perimeter fencing for the schools.

The event culminated with the official handover of textbooks to the school libraries, marking a significant milestone in enhancing learning resources for Abbi students.

Remedial Work Begins on Asaba-Onitsha Section of Benin-Onitsha Expressway

By Sunday Apah

Delta State’s Acting Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, expressed optimism on Thursday as remedial work commenced on the degraded section of the Benin-Onitsha Expressway, particularly affecting motorists on the Asaba-Onitsha route.

During an on-site inspection of the damaged road and surrounding areas in Asaba, which have been experiencing heavy traffic due to the road’s condition, Onyeme reported receiving assurances from the contractor that the first lane of the dual carriageway will be repaired to facilitate smoother traffic flow before the rainy season concludes.

The Acting Governor noted that the deterioration of internal roads in Asaba has been exacerbated by diverted traffic from the federal road, leading to plans for repairs on these routes as well.

“We have thoroughly assessed Nnebisi Road and Dennis Osadebay Way, as well as various failing sections along the Ibusa/Asaba road towards the Koka Interchange,” he stated.

“Measures are currently being taken to address some critical areas where a truck recently fell onto two smaller vehicles. We are documenting other affected spots, and our technical team will act swiftly to ensure repairs.”

Recognizing the historical significance of these roads, Onyeme remarked, “While contractors have previously done commendable work, our internal road network was not designed for the volume of heavy vehicles now using them due to issues with the federal road. We aim to rectify all damaged sections in Asaba effectively.”

He also expressed gratitude to federal authorities for mobilizing workers to address the major failures in the expressway, emphasizing, “This initiative will alleviate pressure on our local roads. I am confident that in the coming days, the issues related to these damaged areas will be resolved.”

In response to calls for restricting heavy vehicles on internal roads, the Acting Governor stressed the challenges of enforcing such measures.

“We will continue to advocate for improvements as a state, but there are limits to our capabilities. Many truck drivers are residents of Delta State, and if the expressway is compromised, they will inevitably seek alternative routes, which could have broader economic implications.”

Accompanying Onyeme on the inspection tour were several key officials, including the Commissioner for Works (Urban Roads), Hon. Reuben Izeze, Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, and Chief Patrick Ukah of the Asaba Capital Territory Development Agency.

Music Knows No Boundaries, Says Onyeme, Delta State Acting Governor

By Sunday Apah

The Acting Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, recently emphasized that music serves as a universal language capable of bridging cultural and linguistic divides.

Speaking on Wednesday at the International Festival for Choral and Traditional Music in Asaba, Onyeme highlighted music’s ability to connect individuals from varied backgrounds and unite them for a common purpose.

“It is fitting that Asaba has been chosen to host this year’s event in Nigeria,” he stated. “Delta State is a vibrant center for music and entertainment, boasting a rich legacy of talented artists.

“For our international guests, it’s worth noting that renowned musicians such as Edna Ogholi, Harrysong, Omawumi, and the late Ras Kimono hail from this state.”

He further mentioned prominent gospel artists like Samsong and the late Sammie Okposo, and reminded attendees of the Delta State government’s annual Praise and Thanksgiving Day on May 29, celebrating the blessings and faithfulness of God towards the community.

Onyeme praised the festival’s mission to foster friendship, mutual respect, and understanding among Africans, while also raising awareness of cultural heritage and promoting education through the arts—especially for the continent’s youth.

He emphasized the importance of uplifting African youths amidst challenges such as poverty, disease, and societal vices.

Additionally, he noted that Asaba has become a preferred location for conferences, sporting events, and other significant international gatherings.

Dr. Daniel Okoh, General Superintendent of Christ Holy Church International and President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, who served as the festival’s patron, spoke earlier about the need for African unity.

“We must use choral music to convey that we need one another and to assert our roles as champions of peace across the continent,” he remarked.

The festival also included a special tribute in the form of an award presented to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in recognition of his support for Christian-related events. Various choral and cultural ensembles from across Africa graced the occasion with their performances.

Tension in Delta as Community Issues 21-Day Ultimatum to NEPL to Commence Construction of Abura Flow Station

0

By Sunday Apah

Emadadja community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State has issued a 21-day ultimatum to NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) to commence construction of the flow station at Abura or prepare to vacate the area.

This decision was communicated in a letter addressed to the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), signed by Ambassador Festus Oshemughen and Comrade Christopher Origbo, the President General and Secretary General of Emadadja community, respectively.

In the letter, community representatives stated, “It has been a long time since oil operations began in Emadadja Community.

“Throughout this period, the oil extracted here has been routed to Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South LGA.

“Despite numerous efforts to establish a proposed flow station to assess production capacity over the years, these attempts have proven unsuccessful, leading to concerns that our benefits are being undermined.

“After much discussion, it was agreed that the flow station should be built as soon as possible; however, we have seen no progress to date.”

The letter further emphasized, “In light of these concerns, a community assembly meeting was convened, attended by all Executive Committee members, youth, women, and elders.

“Key issues contributing to the delay in constructing the flow station were discussed, and we found them deeply troubling.”

The community expressed their frustration regarding “the hardship and underdevelopment faced by our residents amidst abundant resources.

“We have concluded that former NPDC, now NEPL, and their partners show little interest in the community’s development and the welfare of its people.

“Thus, we have resolved to give a 21-day ultimatum for immediate mobilization to the site for the construction of the flow station.

“We also demand the completion of all MoU projects that were agreed upon before the implementation of the PIA, as well as completion of the drilling processes for Wells 13 and 14, which have been abandoned.”

Also, they called on NNPC to urgently direct NEPL to revoke any contracts with the company currently engaged for the construction of the OML 65 flow station and ensure the proper management of the field.

The community representatives voiced their concerns regarding a joint venture partnership that occurred in London on August 3, 2022, stating that it holds no interest in developing phase 1 of the approved OML 65 project.

As a result, they do not accept any further operations from these companies in their community.

“This position must be taken seriously, or we cannot guarantee the security and safety of OML 65 oil exploration on our land,” they warned.

Copies of the letter have also been forwarded to the Governor of Delta State, the Commanding Officer of 63 Brigade in Asaba, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, the Managing Director of NEPL, the Executive Chairman of Udu LGA, and other relevant authorities.

CDHR Calls for Investigation into Alleged Land Grabbing in Delta State

0

By Sunday Apah

The Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has raised concerns over a scheme allegedly orchestrated by powerful individuals in Asaba, Delta State, aimed at unlawfully dispossessing Hajia Halima, a female landowner, of her property.

The organization is urging Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun to take immediate action to ensure justice in this matter.

The CDHR noted that, due to the influential connections of those involved, a case that should have remained within the jurisdiction of the Delta State Command has been moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The organization has requested the IGP to return the inquiry to the original local unit for proper handling.

In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade (Dr) Kehinde Prince Taiga, CDHR highlighted an alarming trend of land seizures using the authority of security agencies in Delta State and beyond.

The group asserted that it is crucial to address these injustices in the interest of the community.

Referencing multiple petitions submitted by Hajia Halima’s legal representatives, CDHR indicated that efforts to remove her from her property are ongoing, despite substantial evidence proving her ownership.

A notable instance cited involved the law firm OG Nwachukwu & Co., which, in a letter dated October 2, 2024, confirmed Hajia Halima’s legal purchase of land from Amachai Community, Delta State.

The statement revealed that after acquiring the property, Hajia Halima fulfilled all communal obligations, fenced the land, and constructed various facilities, including security structures and agricultural ponds.

However, on September 20, 2024, she received alarming news from her security guard that individuals had forcibly entered her property with bulldozers and were demolishing her structures, allegedly with police presence complicating the situation.

Taiga also referred to a protest by AL-JABBAAR & ASSOCIATES, representing Hajia Halima, which accused certain individuals of contempt of court and threatening her safety.

Alarmingly, it was revealed that one Amaechi Joseph Ayalogu, alongside CSP Ben Ayalogu, a member of the police force, had conspired to transfer the case to Abuja to hinder local proceedings.

In conclusion, CDHR is calling on IGP Egbetokun to facilitate a return of the case to Delta State and instruct the local police to conduct a comprehensive investigation before initiating court proceedings.

This approach would allow all parties to present their ownership documentation for fair adjudication in a competent court.
