In light of the ongoing kidnappings and killings in Otokutu, Usiefrun, Egbo-Uhurie, Ekrokpe, Arhagba, and other communities within Ughievwen Kingdom, a joint security meeting was convened to seek solutions to the security challenges in these areas.

The meeting took place at the office of the council chairman and was attended by community leaders, including the chairpersons from Okwagbe Waterside, Ophorigbala, Iwhrogun, Esaba, Otutuama, Egbo-Ideh, and Otegbo communities.

During the meeting, the council chairman, Hon. Lucky Irorefe Avweromre, PhD, expressed deep concern over the persistent violence affecting Otokutu, Usiefrun, Egbo-Uhurie, Ekrokpe, and Arhagba communities.

He assured attendees that his administration would take every possible step to address the security challenges in Ughievwen Kingdom and other parts of Ughelli South Local Government Area.

Avweromre, while reaffirming his commitment to the four key pillars of his administration—Peace, Unity, Innovation, and Development—aligned with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, commended the Okobaro of Ughievwen Kingdom for his proactive efforts to ensure adequate security for the kingdom.

Earlier, HRM Dr. Matthew Ediri Egbi, Owawha II, the Okobaro of Ughievwen Kingdom, highlighted the various security challenges facing the different communities in his kingdom.

He appealed to the council chairman for support in addressing the kidnappings and killings in Egbo-Uhurie, Otokutu, Usiefrun, Ekrokpe, and Arhagba communities.

The monarch also raised concerns about external aggressors claiming ownership of Ophorigbala, Okwagbe Waterside, Egbo-Ideh, Otegbo, Otutuama, Esaba, and Iwhrogun communities in his kingdom.

He emphasized that these articulated issues required urgent attention to restore peace to the area.

His Royal Majesty, Dr. Matthew Ediri Egbi, the Okobaro of Ughievwen Kingdom, has expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of a new refinery in Imode town, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

This ambitious project, which will have a capacity of 10,000 barrels per day, is anticipated to significantly enhance the kingdom’s economic development and create job opportunities for the local population.

In a statement released following the announcement, the monarch underscored the importance of the refinery for the local economy, emphasizing that it would provide various benefits, including job creation and the stimulation of related industries.

He recognized that this development reflects a commitment to driving economic growth in Delta State, which has a rich history in oil production.

The monarch reiterated his support for continued investments in Ughievwen Kingdom and called on the government to ensure that the community reaps the benefits of the new refinery.

He maintained that, with determination and collaboration, Ughievwen Kingdom can achieve even greater heights in the pursuit of sustainable development and economic prosperity.

Abigborodo Community Responds to Sapele Okpe Allegations Regarding Seplat Host Status

The Abigborodo community in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State has vehemently denied allegations made by the Sapele Okpe community concerning land ownership disputes and claims of bias against Chief Edwin Uzor, the Special Adviser on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution for Delta State.

The controversy centers on Seplat Energy’s operations and the recognition of host communities under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

In a statement released by community leaders on Monday, the Abigborodo representatives called the allegations from Sapele Okpe unfounded and an attempt to misrepresent the facts.

“Abigborodo has historically been the rightful owner of the lands where Seplat operates, including Ugbekoko, which hosts Seplat’s jetty and oil wells,” stated Hon. Misan Ukubeyinje, Chairman of the Abigborodo Management Committee.

The community expressed frustration over Seplat Energy’s ongoing refusal to acknowledge them as a host community despite numerous appeals. “We have sent multiple letters to Seplat asserting our legitimate claims, but they continue to classify us as merely an ‘impacted community,’ which we categorically reject,” Ukubeyinje emphasized.

The Abigborodo community argued that Seplat’s current operations, including plans for new drilling sites near their land, amount to trespassing. “We have repeatedly urged Seplat to cease any illegal activities on our territory until this matter is resolved, but they have disregarded our requests,” said Victor Atseponu, Secretary of the Abigborodo Management Committee.

In response to claims of bias regarding the investigation led by Chief Edwin Uzor, the Abigborodo community maintained that the January 16, 2025, site visit by the Peace Building Committee was conducted transparently and inclusively.

“The committee’s visit was attended by representatives from the Department of State Security, police, and local government officials, making the Sapele Okpe community’s accusations of exclusion unfounded,” explained Engr. Great Kpenosen, President of the Abigborodo Youth Association.

The leaders accused the Sapele Okpe community of fabricating narratives to undermine the ongoing investigation, stating that their demand for Chief Uzor’s removal appears to be a tactic to stall justice. “The entire process has been fair, and the evidence supports our claims,” Kpenosen added.

Additionally, the Abigborodo community condemned attempts to involve Chief Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, the Alema of Warri, in this dispute. “Involving our respected leader’s name in this matter is not only defamatory but also disrespectful. Chief Uduaghan was not part of the investigation, yet the Sapele Okpe community continues to spread unfounded allegations,” Ukubeyinje stated.

The Abigborodo community clarified that their dispute does not relate to the Okpe Sobo forest reserve referenced by the Sapele Okpe community. “The forest reserve issue was settled and officially documented in 2021. The current matter strictly concerns Seplat’s activities in areas that clearly fall within our land,” Atseponu elaborated.

They also criticized the claims made by Ugbukurusu to the contested land, asserting that this community is situated over 15 kilometers away from the areas in question.

The leaders highlighted the peaceful protests organized in November 2024 to draw attention to their situation after Seplat ignored directives to cease operations. “We felt compelled to exercise our constitutional right to protest. Our message is clear: recognize Abigborodo as a host community and halt any illegal activities on our lands,” Ukubeyinje affirmed.

Following these protests, which lasted four days, the Nigerian Army’s 90 Amphibious Battalion organized a stakeholders’ meeting. “The outcome was an agreement to suspend protests for two weeks to facilitate discussions, yet Seplat opted to escalate tensions by petitioning the Governor against us,” Kpenosen noted.

The Abigborodo community accused the Sapele Okpe community of attempting to mislead the public for their own interests. “Their press statements are fueled by greed and misinformation. The truth is evident, and we believe that any forthcoming investigations will vindicate our claims,” Ukubeyinje stated.

Emphasizing the impartial nature of the ongoing investigation, they added, “The Peace Building Committee has conducted a thorough and unbiased process. Accusations of favoritism are merely distractions,” Atseponu asserted.

The Abigborodo community called on Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to dismiss the Sapele Okpe community’s demands for Chief Uzor’s removal. “We urge the Governor to allow the investigation to progress without interference, as the truth must be upheld and justice delivered,” Ukubeyinje concluded.

As tensions continue, the Abigborodo community remains ready for further dialogue to defend their rights. “We are fully prepared for any additional investigations. The facts are clear, and we will persist in asserting our status as Seplat’s rightful host community,” Kpenosen declared.

Oborevwori’s Legacy Projects: A Response to Critics, Says Aniagwu

By Sunday Apah

Delta State’s Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, stated on Wednesday that the legacy projects initiated by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori are effectively addressing critics in the state.

During a recent inspection of the ongoing stormwater management project aimed at alleviating flooding in the areas of Okuokoko, Ugolo-Okpe, Osubi, and surrounding communities, Aniagwu expressed confidence in the governor’s commitment to implementing impactful initiatives for the benefit of the citizens.

Accompanied by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, and senior officials from the ministry, Aniagwu commented, “In my previous address to the media, I remarked that the governor’s focus is on responding to criticism by launching additional projects.”

He emphasized, “What we are witnessing here is another testament to his dedication to establishing enduring legacies through substantial development across all 25 local government areas in our state.”

The commissioner elaborated, “This specific project involves a storm drainage system designed to manage excess rainwater and mitigate flooding issues in Ugolo-Okpe, Okuokoko, Osubi, and neighboring areas. Previously, these communities experienced significant flooding even during minor downpours, often leading to homes being inundated.”

He further referenced ongoing efforts in Asaba, stating, “Just as we are addressing flooding in this area, the governor is also tackling similar issues in Asaba. Recently, we visited storm drainage constructions leading from Ogbeogonogo Market into the River Niger, as well as initiatives to enhance the waterfront in Asaba.

“These projects represent meaningful developments for our community. The underground storm drainage is currently in place, and in just a week, the area’s condition will have improved significantly.”

Aniagwu also conducted an inspection of the Esezi Road dualization and flood control measures near Orerokpe, as well as along the Orerokpe – Okuloho – Oviri-Okpe – Aragba Road. He urged contractors to expedite their work to make the most of the dry season ahead of anticipated heavy rains.

“Recently, Governor Oborevwori made it clear that he will not compromise the quality of project delivery for personal relationships. This means that all contractors must adhere strictly to the specifications outlined in our Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation,” he stated.

He concluded by urging teams to increase their pace, asserting the importance of completing projects swiftly to prevent disruption during heavy rainfall. “What you see here is another example of Governor Oborevwori addressing his critics with yet another significant legacy project.”

Oborevwori: Ensuring value for Delta’s projects

By Festus Ahon

Few appointees of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State ever anticipated that project inspections would feature on a Sunday itinerary. However, that was exactly what happened last Sunday when, after church service, the Governor embarked on an unscheduled inspection of projects within Asaba and its environs.

At the proposed Asaba International Market, Governor Oborevwori assured that the state would experience accelerated project delivery in 2025. He noted that the site which was formerly the Abraka Market, had become a hotspot for criminal activities, before the state government relocated the market to Oko.

“The State Government decided to relocate the market to Oko and we have made arrangements with Efab Properties Limited to develop this place.

“The state government is getting 20 percent because we are providing land and they are to build and allocate but we will get 20 percent from it and it’s something that we encourage”, he said.

At the Asaba Waterfront City Project, on Tuesday, Governor Oborevwori, said that it was conceived by the previous administration through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. He said the state government’s role was to construct a 6-lane access road to the new city, while the developers were expected to develop the city.

He said: “Asaba is becoming very attractive to property developers who are coming from Lagos to Asaba because Asaba today is housing most of those people from the South-East. They are coming here because they find Asaba very comfortable and they know that we are also hospitable.

“The Asaba Waterfront City Project is a Public/ Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement between the state government and the developers.

“Our obligation is to reclaim the place to give them an access route, a six-lane access road, to this place. They have done about 20 percent of this job; the challenge they are having is the buildings on the right of way.

“We have released money for compensation to the property owners and we have also released funds to the contractor for the project. They have assured us they will complete the road project in July; so, I have come here to look at the work that has been done and I am happy that they are on site.”

At the Oko-Amakom to Oko-Obiakpu main alignment road, the governor said, “this road is very important to the people of Oko; it is one meter above the 2012 flood level and the people sought refuge on the road during the last flood.

“The contractor has assured us that the project will be completed in June/July this year. What we are spending here on this road is much more than what we would have spent in constructing a 10km road elsewhere because of the terrain.

“It is our strong commitment towards opening up rural areas to enhance the economic development of our rural dwellers.”

On the Marine Road, Off Cable Point Road, Asaba, Governor Oborevwori said the road was very vital to the people of Asaba because goods are ferried from across the River Niger.

He assured that the State Government was working hard to clean up Asaba, stressing, “we want the best for them and I believe that this year a lot will change.”

Governor Oborevwori also inspected the ongoing construction work on Leo Okonweze and Odozi-Obodo streets, off Ezenei Avenue, in Asaba, and urged the contractors to expedite completion of the projects.

…Vows to sanction erring contractors

Also on Tuesday, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori reiterated that he was out for erring contractors who execute shoddy jobs for the state and vowed severe sanctions for them and site engineers who okay shoddy jobs for payment.

Governor Oborevwori issued the warning shortly after inspecting the Achalla-Ibusa Road being executed by the state government. The Governor, who frowned at the poor quality drainage executed by the contractor handling the project, reiterated that his administration would not tolerate any shoddy job.

He disclosed that his decision to inspect the project stemmed from an unsatisfactory feedback he had received from individuals that he had previously sent to evaluate the project.

Governor Oborevwori, who also inspected the recently completed internal roads road in the 63 Brigade Barracks of the Nigerian Army in Aboh-Ogwashi, applauded the contractor for the speedy execution of the project for which, he said, was awarded three months ago.

“We awarded this project three months ago, and I am pleased to commend the contractor for doing an excellent job. This road will encourage further development, allowing the Army to proceed with building structures in the area,” he said.

Other projects inspected by the Governor included the gully erosion site along Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, the perimeter fence and road around Asaba International Airport as well as Kwekagbor Layout, opposite Summit Junction, Asaba.

…urges Nigerians to support families of fallen heroes

On Wednesday, the Governor participated in the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Cenotaph in Asaba and urged Nigerians to support families of fallen heroes.

Governor Oborevwori, who led other top government functionaries, military, and paramilitary personnel to lay wreaths in honour of the nation’s fallen heroes, said: “My prayer is for God to grant the souls of our fallen heroes eternal rest and also to console with their families,” the governor said.

“I want to reassure their families that they will never be neglected. Whichever way we can support them, we will continue to support the widows and also those in the forefront today”.

…Says he won’t sacrifice quality jobs for friendship

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Thursday, said his administration’s priority remained the delivery of quality projects aimed at giving value to the people, regardless of personal relationships.

Speaking during the inspection of multiple projects in Asaba, the state capital, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that competence, integrity and value- for- money were critical to his administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda.

The projects inspected included Ogbeosonwe Ogbeilo road, Ogbogonogo market storm drainage project and Ogbe-Ofu Road, off Jarret Road, Cable Point, Asaba.

Others are the Amaechi Agusi Street with 10 adjoining streets, Dorah Allanah Street, Oluu Street, Burutu Drive, off Infant Jesus Road, Odilison Junior Crescent, Agbogun Close, Ngozi Odiaka Avenue, Aloy Isomede Street, Ezeobi Ojukwu Street, and Ajudua Street, Okpanam, Aretha Table Water Street, Off NTA Road, Asaba, and Redeemer’s Street Asaba.

Governor Oborevwori said, “I was elected to serve the people of Delta, not to please a select few. Friendship cannot, and will, not, take precedence over the quality of projects we provide for the people.

“Contractors in the state know that; I have always emphasized the need for quality jobs but the people who are causing this problem are not the big companies; it is some of our indigenous contractors that are causing these problems.”

…Says actions guided by Delta’s overall interests

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Friday, said all his actions as governor were guided by the interest of the people and assured that no one would short change the state under his watch.

Oborevwori disclosed this at the 50th birth anniversary thanksgiving of the Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Engr Emeka Nwaobi, at St. Paul’s Catholic Cathedral, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

While commending the celebrant on his empowerment programme for the people, Governor Oborevwori urged people in authority to always remember the widows and the other less- privileged persons in the society.

He said; “As people in authority, we must do what we will be remembered for; so, I am happy that you are empowering people from your constituency.

“We have so many people today who don’t want the progress of this state. What we are doing now some people are not happy because they feel we want to outshine them.

“But we will always do what the people want; for us, it is the people first, Delta first. All these positions are temporary; the thing you will be remembered for is the service you rendered and I am doing my own now.

“Like I told people, the state’s contractors, nobody is my friend because the people who voted for me want the best from me.

“It is me, the people, will ask questions, not you as a contractor; so, some people may not be happy, but that is their business. At the end, I will be remembered for the good things that I achieved for them.”

Deltans Experiencing Positive Changes Under Oborevwori’s Leadership – Clark

Elder Statesman and Convener of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, has praised Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his substantial accomplishments since taking office on May 29, 2023.

In a recent open letter, Clark commended Governor Oborevwori for his swift progress and deemed him as having surpassed his predecessors in a remarkably short period.

He specifically highlighted the transformation of Warri into a vibrant commercial center and addressed long-standing infrastructure issues across the state.

Clark took issue with Senator Ned Nwoko’s claims of inefficiency regarding the Oborevwori administration, characterizing such assertions as unfounded.

He encouraged critics to acknowledge that no past governor of Delta State has managed to deliver comparable results within the same timeframe.

The prominent Ijaw leader recognized the governor’s initiatives to restore Warri as one of Nigeria’s key commercial hubs, a status that had waned due to previous neglect.

He applauded Governor Oborevwori for engaging Julius Berger Construction Company to undertake vital projects, including the construction of three flyovers, a cloverleaf interchange, pedestrian bridges, and extensive road expansions at the DSC Roundabout.

These endeavors, valued at ₦78 billion, are already progressing significantly.

“Warri is quickly regaining its former glory. The once-declining Warri Township is now being revitalized under Oborevwori’s administration,” he expressed.

Clark contrasted this revitalization with the past oversight that allowed Warri to languish while development efforts were concentrated in less populated areas, leaving bustling commercial locations like Warri and Uvwie overlooked.

He further commended the governor for ensuring that infrastructural benefits extend throughout Delta State. He mentioned the ongoing dualization of the Asaba-Ughelli Road and other projects that are positively impacting nearly every community in the state.

“Today, the landscape has changed. Nearly all regions of Delta State are experiencing the benefits of Governor Oborevwori’s initiatives,” said Clark.

He also lauded the governor for addressing a debt exceeding ₦300 billion accumulated by former administrations while prioritizing projects that serve the community over political patronage.

Clark dismissed Senator Nwoko’s recent criticisms—asserting that they lacked merit. He challenged the senator to refute his claims about the ongoing developments.

“Instead of distributing state resources for political favors, the governor is committing them to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives,” he stated.

He urged Governor Oborevwori to maintain his focus and continue his effective governance while ensuring that the needs of oil-producing communities are met and development is equitably distributed across the state.

“I am not one for empty praise; I strive to speak the truth,” Clark affirmed. “Governor Oborevwori has made impressive strides in advancing development and democracy in Delta State. I encourage him to remain committed to his vision, ensuring that every community benefits,” he concluded.

Governor Oborevwori Prioritizes Quality Projects Over Personal Relationships

By Sunday Apah

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized on Thursday that his administration’s primary focus remains on delivering quality projects that benefit the people, regardless of personal connections.

Speaking during an inspection of various projects in Asaba, the state capital, Governor Oborevwori highlighted that competence, integrity, and value for money are cornerstones of his administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda.

Among the projects examined were the Ogbeosonwe and Ogbeilo roads, the Ogbogonogo Market storm drainage project, and Ogbe-Ofu Road off Jarret Road in Cable Point, Asaba. Additional projects included the 1.7 km Amaechi Agusi Street along with ten adjoining streets, such as Dorah Allanah Street, Oluu Street, and Redeemer’s Street.

Governor Oborevwori stated, “I was elected to serve the people of Delta, not to please a select few. Friendship cannot and will not take precedence over the quality of projects we deliver to the public.”

He underscored the need for contractors in the state to prioritize quality in their work, noting that issues primarily arise from some local contractors rather than large companies. “The significant challenges we’re facing often come from indigenous contractors. Some may claim that I’m not supporting their growth if I don’t use them, but quality must always take priority. Those who fail to meet standards will be blacklisted.”

Highlighting his commitment to public interest, he remarked, “The concerns of the people are more important than any individual grievances. While some contractors may be unhappy, the satisfaction of the majority is what truly matters. We are not staging a media spectacle; what we are doing is authentic. Those who know me well understand that I will not compromise on quality. If you want to be my friend, deliver quality work. If not, I will part ways with you.”

Addressing concerns regarding project costs, Governor Oborevwori acknowledged the increase in rates due to inflation and rising material costs. “We can only consider reviews for jobs awarded in 2022 and early 2023, prior to my administration. When we took office, the exchange rate was approximately N750 to $1, and now it stands at around N1600. Although we empathize with contractors, our primary aim is to ensure that high standards are met.”

Governor Oborevwori also encouraged Asaba residents to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and directed the State Commissioner for Environment, the Chairman of the Waste Management Board, and the Chairman of the Taskforce on Environment to ensure total compliance with cleanliness efforts.
