Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, announced on Friday that the dualization of the Ughelli-Asaba Road is nearing completion.

During a visit to inspect the reconstruction of the Olomoro–Igbide Road in Isoko South Local Government Area, along with the current progress on Sector C2 of the Ughelli–Asaba Expressway, the Governor expressed that the residents of Delta State are satisfied with the speed and quality of the ongoing development initiatives led by his administration.

He pointed out that the favorable responses from citizens reflect his government’s dedication to fostering inclusive growth and sustainable progress.

Governor Oborevwori conveyed his approval of the advancements made in both the Igbide-Olomoro and Ughelli-Asaba road dualization projects.

He highlighted that the MORE Agenda, which serves as a framework for his administration’s development strategies, is already demonstrating significant outcomes that cater to the needs and aspirations of the people of Delta State.

“I am pleased with the efficiency and craftsmanship on display,” Oborevwori remarked. “When I visited in March, the contractors assured me that Sector C1 would be finished by May. Based on what I see now, they are on target. This project will be finalized shortly.”

He continued, “We have received numerous commendations from travelers using this route, as the journey from Asaba to Ughelli now takes less than two hours. This 143-kilometer road represents a major accomplishment, and it’s evident that the community is benefiting from it.”

The Governor asserted that the contentment of the populace is the ultimate indicator of successful governance.

“We take great joy in our role to serve and bring about significant development. Satisfaction among the people brings me happiness.”

He added that improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and education are positively impacting lives, emphasizing that these initiatives embody the essence of governance.

Governor Oborevwori noted that positive feedback is evident across all three senatorial districts, with citizens commending the quality of roads, educational institutions, health services, and youth empowerment initiatives.

“This reassures us that we are on the right path and inspires us to strive for even more accomplishments,” he declared.

He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that every region of the state experiences the benefits of democratic governance, promising that numerous projects have been completed in anticipation of his administration’s second anniversary.

The Governor also reaffirmed his dedication to timely payments to contractors and encouraged them to expedite their work, reiterating his ambition to provide more democratic contributions in alignment with his MORE Agenda and the Renewed Hope Agenda.

By Sunday Apah

In a significant push to enhance infrastructure and deliver on promises made to riverine communities, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has set a target for the Ayakoromo Bridge project to be completed by early 2027.

Governor Oborevwori acknowledged the prolonged delays that the important project has faced over the years but reaffirmed his dedication to ensuring that it reaches completion on time.

During a recent inspection of the Ayakoromo Bridge site over the Forcados River, along with a 3km access road in the Ughelli South and Burutu local government areas, he highlighted the importance of the 612-meter bridge, which features 18 spans, each spaced 24 meters apart, for the residents of Egbo-Ide and Ayakoromo.

While the contract for the bridge was awarded prior to his administration, he ensured that the contractor was re-engaged and brought back to the site.

“This project holds immense significance for me and the community. The contractor has indicated early 2027 as the completion date, but we would be delighted to see it finished sooner,” he stated.

“I am optimistic that the contractor will meet their commitments, and I have instructed them to expedite the work. This bridge is essential for connecting nearby villages.

“The excitement among the people is palpable, even though they were unaware of my visit. This enthusiasm underscores how vital the bridge is to both communities and others in the vicinity.”

Earlier, Governor Oborevwori inspected the Trans-Warri Road and Bridges Project in Warri South Local Government Area.

He noted that this initiative will improve connectivity and generate economic benefits for both urban and rural populations.

“This project is crucial for our people because it links us with rural residents and broadens opportunities. The happiness displayed by the local residents as we arrived was evident; elders and villagers greeted us with joy.

“This project holds particular significance for the Itsekiri nation, which is why I am committed to overseeing its completion.

“I was here for an inspection in September 2024, and I return today to assess progress. I believe that we will inaugurate this project by early next year, having been delayed for nearly 19 years.

“We will not accept any further delays beyond the established timelines. Under our MORE Agenda, we are dedicated to delivering more for the people of Delta State, in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he affirmed.

Governor Oborevwori also announced plans to construct two jetties in the area and explained that due to the rainy season, the construction firm is allowing the newly filled areas to settle to ensure road stability.

He urged the company to expedite their work to achieve project completion within his first term in office.

SSPTI Condemns Governor Okpebholo for Demolition of NBM of Africa Secretariat in Benin

The South-South Professionals & Transparency Initiative (SSPTI) has criticized Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for ordering the demolition of the multi-purpose Secretariat of the Neo-Black Movement (NBM) of Africa in Benin. The complex, valued at approximately N1.2 billion, was destroyed as part of the governor’s alleged initiative to combat criminal activity within the state.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Dr. Ugochukwu Alozie, SSPTI condemned the governor’s actions as vindictive and unjustified, emphasizing that no criminal or illegal activities had been linked to the building in question.

The organization urged the NBM of Africa to seek legal recourse against the Edo State government in order to obtain compensation for what they characterized as a blatant abuse of power by Governor Okpebholo. They believe a competent court could deliver justice that would hold the government accountable for this unwarranted decision.

It was reported that Governor Okpebholo led a team to dismantle suspected hideouts for criminals in the state, which included the location where military personnel had previously rescued kidnap victims forced to engage in fraudulent activities. During this operation, he ordered the demolition of the NBM Secretariat, alleging without substantiation that it served as a hideout for criminals.

The NBM Secretariat, estimated to have cost over N1.5 billion, features a state-of-the-art 2,000-seat hall for events, a skill acquisition center aimed at empowering local youth, 20 well-furnished guest rooms, a standard indoor swimming pool, a relaxation lounge, a 250 KVA generator, and various other facilities.

According to SSPTI, the group’s investigation suggests that Governor Okpebholo’s actions were politically motivated, targeting prominent members of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who are believed to have ties to the NBM of Africa.

SSPTI criticized the governor for choosing to attack a collective organization rather than addressing individual political opponents directly, stating, “This act demonstrates a use of oppression against a group that has not harmed or disturbed his government in any way.”

Furthermore, the organization noted that the NBM of Africa has been involved in significant charitable activities, including recent donations of furniture and school supplies to numerous primary and secondary schools in Edo State, aiming to support underprivileged students.

“In targeting these responsible and community-oriented individuals, the governor has overstepped,” SSPTI concluded, encouraging NBM members to pursue legal action against Governor Okpebholo for his perceived overreach and misuse of power.

Southern Youth Leader Urges Unified Support for Tinubu’s Reelection in 2027

As Nigeria gears up for another significant election, the Southern Youth Movement (SYM), a prominent advocacy group, has urged the Southern regions—including the South West, South South, and South East—to closely examine the current political landscape and collectively support the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

During a press conference held in Egbema, Delta State, National Leader of SYM, High Chief Promise Lawuru (also known as Ozigizaga), emphasized that the upcoming election transcends mere party loyalty, framing it as a critical moment for regional equity, national balance, and long-term political strategy.

“We call on all individuals in Southern Nigeria to unite behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection campaign, even if it requires setting aside personal party affiliations,” he stated.

Lawuru highlighted that Nigeria has historically adhered to a system of rotating presidential power between the North and the South, which has played a vital role in managing ethnic tensions and fostering national unity.

“Therefore, if the Southern regions fail to support a sitting Southern president, it would disrupt this established pattern and strengthen claims from the North that the South lacks the political resolve to hold power collectively. This could undermine Southern influence in future political dynamics,” he warned.

He further elaborated that allowing certain northern factions to demand a return of power to the North after just one term of Southern leadership could create a precarious situation.

“Such a development would lead to prolonged Northern dominance in power while relegating the South to mere symbolic, one-term presidencies, gradually diminishing the South’s political standing,” Lawuru argued.

“Supporting Tinubu’s reelection goes beyond party lines; it is an issue of regional solidarity and unity. When the South West, South South, and South East come together to vote, it showcases their collective strength.

“This unity not only boosts the South’s negotiating power at the federal level but also conveys that the region is capable of safeguarding its interests. In the realm of politics, respect and recognition are garnered through unity and consistency.”

The Southern Youth Leader asserted, “A second term for President Tinubu ensures continuity in tackling these vital issues. Development takes time, and abandoning initiatives midway often forces us to start anew.”

“Although voting should ideally hinge on merit, vision, and performance rather than ethnicity, when a particular bloc continually employs ethnic mobilization to secure and maintain power, others must strategically respond to protect their interests.

“Supporting Tinubu is not merely about his individual candidacy; it’s about reinforcing the principle that every region deserves an equitable opportunity for national leadership. It stands for equity, fairness, and democratic justice.”

“This moment calls for strategic clarity rather than partisan emotions. The South must broaden its perspective beyond party affiliations and focus on the larger goal of preserving political equity within Nigeria’s evolving democracy. Tinubu’s reelection is not just a political choice; it is a regional necessity,” Lawuru concluded.

CDHR Urges IGP Egbetokun to Reinstate Malicious Damage Case in Asaba Land Grabbing Incident

By Sunday Apah

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has criticized the decision made by the Magistrate Court in Asaba to discontinue the case involving malicious damage, attempted murder, and actions likely to disturb public peace, which was brought before the court following a seemingly fraudulent withdrawal letter submitted by an unidentified police counsel.

The CDHR has condemned this action as a distortion of justice.

In light of this situation, the committee has called upon Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to reopen the case, referenced as suit number CMA/334c/2024 in Asaba Magistrate Court.

They emphasized that failing to do so could be misinterpreted as a police conspiracy to deny a law-abiding citizen due justice against his oppressors.

The case originated from an incident on July 23, 2024, in which armed gunmen, accompanied by police reportedly aligned with prominent land grabbers, invaded a property in Issele-Azagba, located behind Wichtech Roofing Company in Oshimili North Council area, Delta State.

This assault led to approximately N200 million worth of property damage and left a police orderly injured. In response, the complainant, Godwin Ikechukwu, sought legal redress.

After reporting the incident to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the Okpanam Division in Asaba, the police subsequently initiated the case in the Magistrate Court.

However, while the trial was still underway, unauthorized police personnel from Abuja submitted a letter of discontinuation without consulting the complainant, abruptly halting the proceedings. This action has raised concerns about potential favoritism within the police force regarding the case.

Reacting to these developments, Comrade (Dr.) Kehinde Prince Taiga, President of the CDHR, expressed that the police’s choice to drop the case without the complainant’s involvement was both absurd and illogical, undermining the integrity of Nigeria’s judicial system.

Taiga argued that the appropriate course of action would have been to allow the trial to proceed to its conclusion, highlighting that this approach would uphold public trust in the justice system, particularly for the average citizen.

He stated, “In a time when the judiciary faces scrutiny over allegations of biased justice favoring only the affluent, the police should have allowed the court to complete its proceedings to help restore faith in our legal system.”

He further criticized the police for their hasty decision, suggesting it indicated ongoing corruption among some officers, willing to compromise justice for personal gain, potentially due to financial inducements from influential individuals.

The CDHR is now urging IGP Kayode Egbetokun to reverse the decision to discontinue suit number CMA/334c/2024 at the Asaba Magistrate Court, filed on behalf of Godwin Ikechukwu against defendants including Adokwe Peter Nonso and Madu Obinna.

Additionally, the organization has called for inquiries into the actions of the police counsels from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, who produced the discontinuation letter without due consideration for the complainant.

The CDHR also pointed out the letter of discontinuation dated April 22, 2025, signed by Rotshang Faith Dimka, legal counsel/prosecutor, FCID, Force Headquarters, Abuja, and urged a thorough investigation to determine its authenticity.

If found fraudulent, they have requested prosecution of those responsible to deter future misconduct among officers exploiting the justice system for personal interests.

“Our Forum is dedicated to backing him. We urge all constituents to remain united during this new phase of our political journey. Our collective aim is the development, peace, and prosperity of all Deltans,” he stated.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has emphasized the crucial role of workers as the foundation for the government’s progress and development.

The Governor made this statement on Thursday during the 2025 Workers’ Day (May Day) celebration held in Asaba.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori remarked that Workers’ Day is not merely a celebration but an opportunity to reflect on our collective journey and reaffirm our dedication to creating a Delta State and Nigeria where every worker is appreciated, empowered, and justly rewarded.

He noted that this year’s theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” is particularly relevant, serving as a strong call to action and a point of unity for all workers.

“Even in difficult times, we must assert our rights, raise our voices, and engage fully in the civic processes that shape our lives,” he added.

The Governor encouraged workers to remain committed to excellence and to work together with unity and purpose to create the Delta State of their aspirations.

“I stand with all Deltans and indeed Nigerians to proudly celebrate the dedication of our hardworking men and women on this Workers’ Day 2025,” he expressed.

“You, the workers of Delta State—civil servants, teachers, healthcare professionals, artisans, farmers, and private sector workers—are the cornerstone of our progress, and I commend you all.”

“My administration deeply values your sacrifices, and we will continuously advocate for policies that support you and your families.”

Governor Oborevwori highlighted that Workers’ Day is not only a day of celebration but a time to reflect on our shared journey and renew our commitment to establishing a Delta State and Nigeria where every worker is respected, empowered, and compensated fairly.

While acknowledging the various challenges, such as global economic pressures and rising living costs, he reassured workers of his administration’s relentless efforts to alleviate these difficulties.

“Since I took office, our administration has prioritized workers within our M.O.R.E. Agenda, implementing measures to enhance worker welfare and ensure a dignified and opportunity-rich work environment.”

“We have guaranteed timely payment of salaries and pensions, addressed backlogs, and launched training programs to enhance your skills.”

“Additionally, we have upgraded workplaces, revitalized healthcare facilities, and renovated schools to support your efforts.”

“Our entrepreneurship initiatives are designed to empower artisans and small business owners, creating jobs and increasing incomes.”

“Despite economic challenges, we are committed to investing in infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and markets, to lower transportation costs and stimulate trade.”

“We are also bolstering agricultural support to improve food security and stabilize prices.”

“These initiatives aim to enhance the quality of life for every worker and their families.”

Governor Oborevwori also announced the introduction of a whistleblower policy with a dedicated hotline to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

“This policy safeguards workers who report misconduct, ensuring your voices are heard and public resources are used for the common good.”

“This represents a government that works for you, grounded in fairness and accountability.”

“As we celebrate today, let us also remember those who have sacrificed for the dignity of labor. May their struggles inspire us to strive for fairness, justice, and equity in our workplaces.”

“I urge you all to remain dedicated to excellence as we work together, with unity and purpose, to realize our shared vision for Delta. My administration will continue to honor your contributions and advocate for policies that uplift you and your families.”

“We remain open to dialogue, believing that cooperation with workers’ unions is essential for lasting progress.”

“Let us move forward, stronger together, towards a brighter and more prosperous future,” the Governor concluded.

Earlier in the event, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, Chairman of the Delta State Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Comrade Martins Bolum, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), called for solidarity among workers to reclaim their civic space amidst the ongoing economic challenges that test their resilience.

The celebrations also featured a vibrant march by various trade unions.
