The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ughelli Correspondents’ Chapel, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a Punch Newspaper Correspondent, Mr. Matthew Ochei, describing his passing as a great loss to the media profession and the nation at large.
Ochei, a native of Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 43 years old.
In a condolence message signed by the Chairman of the chapel, Comrade Matthias Ogbagah, and Assistant Secretary, Comrade Ezekiel Kagbala, the NUJ Ughelli Correspondents’ Chapel commiserated with the Ochei family, journalists across Delta State, and the people of Ukunzu community, noting that the late journalist was a dedicated professional who discharged his duties with courage, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility.
According to the statement, the death of Ochei is a painful blow to the journalism profession in the state.
“This is indeed a critical and painful moment. Delta State has lost a committed and fearless journalist who informed and educated the public with professionalism and integrity,” he said.
“His untimely passing is a heavy blow to his family, the media community, and all who believe in responsible journalism.”
The NUJ Ughelli Chapel extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, praying that God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones he left behind. May Almighty God grant them comfort at this difficult time and grant the soul of the departed eternal rest,” the statement added.
