On Tuesday, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State officially inaugurated a new cluster of housing units along with supporting infrastructure in the Okuama community, located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.
This significant event represents a crucial step in fulfilling the government’s promise to reconstruct the community, which suffered substantial devastation in March 2024 following the tragic loss of 17 Nigerian Army personnel.

The inauguration marks the end of a prolonged period of uncertainty and signifies a hopeful new beginning for the displaced residents of Okuama.
Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori expressed his heartfelt sentiments during the ceremony, stating that this occasion is more than just a formal event; it symbolizes a moment of renewal and an opportunity to turn from hardship toward hope.

“We are gathered here not merely to inaugurate structures but to reaffirm our commitment to a future filled with peace, dignity, and shared prosperity,” he remarked.
Acknowledging the community’s painful past, the governor emphasized the importance of healing and collective rebuilding. “The memories of what happened are still fresh, and the scars remain, but we have decided to pursue a path focused on reconstruction and reconciliation,” he added. He portrayed the resettlement camp not just as a collection of buildings, but as a cornerstone for the revival of community life and stability.
Governor Oborevwori reiterated that his administration’s dedication to rebuilding communities is guided by the principles of the MORE Agenda, which aims to restore trust and uphold the dignity of all residents in Delta State.
He encouraged the people of Okuama to embrace this fresh start with courage and unity, emphasizing that the future of the community rests on their ability to maintain peace and protect the facilities provided by the government.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Hon. Lucky Avweromre, noted that the construction of the Community Resettlement Center was a local government initiative.
He highlighted the significance of the commissioning in fulfilling campaign promises designed to improve peace, unity, innovation, and infrastructural development within the region.
Avweromre stressed the necessity for the community to take ownership of the project, ensuring its proper utilization for the benefit of all residents.
He also appealed for vigilant protection of government property against vandalism and destruction.
The chairman acknowledged the governor’s efforts in enhancing educational and health facilities in Okuama, including the establishment of a primary school, secondary school, and health center.
In a collective address, community representatives Mr. Okrika Emmanuel and Comrade Akemor Victor extended their gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for his unwavering support.
They reflected on the shocking events of March 14, 2024, that devastated their community, acknowledging the governor’s intervention as a crucial lifeline. “We promise to support your government in fostering peace in our environment; we are grateful to have a leader who listens to the people,” they stated.
The completed project features 40 individual housing units, including two buildings, each equipped with ten toilets and bathrooms, a solar-powered water reticulation system, and a paved walkway connecting all structures.
This development not only provides shelter but also aims to restore hope and stability to the Okuama community.
