Oborevwori Unveils 30 New Housing Units for Soldiers in Delta

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Wednesday, officially launched 30 one-bedroom flats designed for officers and soldiers of the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area. He reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of security personnel throughout the state.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Governor emphasized that this housing initiative transcends the mere construction of buildings; it represents the government’s dedication to its military and the overall security framework that fosters peace and development.

Governor Oborevwori praised former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, for his instrumental role in facilitating the establishment of the barracks in Delta. He also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its renewed focus on addressing national security challenges.

He expressed appreciation for the Nigerian Army, particularly the 63 Brigade and the 181 Amphibious Battalion, for their efforts in combating oil theft, criminal activities, and threats to peace within the state and surrounding regions.

“The 30 one-bedroom flats we are inaugurating today highlight our commitment to enhancing the living conditions of those who risk their lives for our safety.

“Providing adequate housing for our soldiers is crucial not only for their well-being but also for boosting their morale and enhancing their capacity to serve with even greater dedication,” the Governor stated.

Oborevwori mentioned that this initiative aligns with the Meaningful Development and Enhanced Peace and Security goals outlined in his administration’s MORE Agenda, emphasizing the inseparable nature of development and security.

Delta State Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Godknows Angele, detailed that the project, for which the contract was awarded in March 2023, includes 30 one-bedroom flats for the 181 Battalion’s officers and soldiers. He praised Governor Oborevwori for seeing the project through to completion, calling it a significant step in supporting the military and reinforcing state security.

Lt. Col. Bukar Dabo, Commanding Officer of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, expressed gratitude to the state government for this initiative, noting that the new housing units would substantially improve the welfare of soldiers and help maintain peace in the area.

In his welcome address, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, Chairman of the Ika South Local Government Council, commended the Governor for approving the project, highlighting that the presence of the military has greatly enhanced safety for residents.

Chief Boniface Ebite, representing the Dein of Agbor, expressed pride in Governor Oborevwori’s accomplishments, underscoring the unique significance of the project due to Agbor’s strategic location and assuring the Governor of the community’s ongoing support.

The commissioning ceremony attracted numerous high-ranking military officials, government representatives, political leaders, and dignitaries, including Brigade Commander, 63 Brigade, Brig. Gen. M. A. Shonibare.
