The newly posted Area Commander for the Ughelli Area Command, Mr. Aliyu Shaba, has appealed to members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ughelli Correspondents’ Chapel, to join hands in reducing crime in his mandate area.
Shaba made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Ughelli Area Commander at his office on Monday.
Speaking during the visit, he said, “I am honoured by this visit as it will strengthen the relationship between the NUJ and the Ughelli Area Command in crime fighting.
“I am here to collaborate with corporate bodies like the NUJ to fight crime and chase criminals from Ughelli North and its environs.
“We did this at Ovwian and Ekpan divisions when I was a DPO, and now we will do the same in Ughelli Area Command so that our people can sleep with their eyes closed.
“Warri is a bigger city than Ughelli, but the crime rate in Ughelli and environs is much higher than that of Warri, and we will not allow that to continue.
“I want to assure you that we will do our best, and in the course of doing our job, if any of my officers misbehave, don’t hesitate to contact me for disciplinary action.”
Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ughelli Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Sunday Apah, stated that the visit was to congratulate ACP Shaba on his new appointment.
He noted that his appointment as ACP of the Ughelli Area Command is a significant responsibility that comes with both challenges and opportunities.
According to him, “As journalists, we recognize the vital role that law enforcement plays in ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of our communities.
“The relationship between the media and the police is crucial in fostering transparency, accountability, and effective communication.
“Our role as journalists is to inform the public, report issues of concern, and uphold the tenets of democracy.
“We believe that your leadership will greatly enhance collaborative efforts between the police and the media in some of our areas of coverage.
“As you settle into your new role, we want to assure you of our commitment to responsible journalism. We recognize that the portrayal of police activities through the media can influence public perceptions and trust.
“Therefore, we are dedicated to providing accurate and balanced information regarding law enforcement activities while being responsible in our coverage of sensitive issues.
“We also see this visit as an opportunity to discuss how we can work together to improve community awareness, address crime-related concerns, and promote peace and security within Ughelli and its surroundings.
“Moreover, we are eager to hear your vision for the Ughelli Area Command and how we, as journalists, can assist in disseminating information that will keep the public informed and engaged.
“Transparency and open dialogue between law enforcement and the press are essential for building community trust and cooperation.
“In conclusion, we wish you success in your new position. We hope that our partnership will grow stronger as we seek to serve the public interest together.”
He assured the police boss that they are always ready to support, report, and provide a voice for the community, adding, “Feel free to reach out to us at any time.”
