President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive for all Nigerian flags to be flown at half-mast in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier today.

The former leader died while undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness in London, United Kingdom. Buhari had been battling health issues for some time.

In a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Buhari as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose legacy of service and sacrifice remains enduring.

The statement further indicated that, “In respect for our former leader, I have instructed that all national flags be lowered to half-staff across the country for the next seven days,” Tinubu announced.

He added, “We pay tribute to his dedicated service. We reflect on his legacy, and we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.”

Tinubu also revealed that an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council will be held on Tuesday to honor Buhari’s memory.

The federal government has announced plans to confer full state honors on Buhari, recognizing his significant contributions to Nigeria.

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” the statement concluded. “May his life continue to inspire Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2019, after being elected twice. He also held the position of military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
