The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has reiterated its dedication to the Renewed Hope Agenda put forth by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting the importance of significant reforms, accountability in institutions, and inclusive development throughout Nigeria.
This affirmation was included in a statement released following the PGF’s two-day gathering in Benin City, Edo State, which took place from June 27 to 28, 2025.
The communiqué, signed by PGF Chairman and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, underscored that the strategic meeting provided a platform for an in-depth examination of Nigeria’s socio-economic trajectory and the essential contribution of subnational governments in fostering national change.
In attendance were governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC), including the newly welcomed Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom. His integration into the Forum was seen as indicative of a growing national consensus on the necessity of people-centered governance and political collaboration to encourage development.
The PGF extended its congratulations to President Tinubu and acknowledged the broad support for his leadership from various stakeholders across the nation.
During their discussions, the Forum evaluated the nation’s economic, social, and political climate, praising the increasing collaboration between federal and state entities, particularly concerning fiscal reforms, food security, energy transition, infrastructure modernization, and the revitalization of the social sector.
The governors committed to maintaining this synergy to reinforce Nigeria’s federal framework.
Regarding economic reforms, the PGF recognized the initial successes of macroeconomic stabilization measures such as the elimination of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates.
However, they stressed that recovering and stimulating the economy must be democratized through enhanced investments in food security, job creation, poverty alleviation, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and social safety programs.
The Forum reaffirmed the critical function of subnational governments as catalysts for economic revitalization, expressing their dedication to advancing economic decentralization according to Section 13 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates a collaborative approach to promote public welfare at all governmental levels.
The PGF welcomed increased fiscal transfers to states and rising investor confidence in Nigeria’s economic outlook, with many APC-led states starting to draw significant domestic and foreign investments.
The Forum also recognized ongoing initiatives to professionalize procurement practices, digitize governance systems, and improve regulatory frameworks. They committed to building on this momentum to enhance productivity-driven infrastructure and boost inter-state competitiveness.
The governors expressed gratitude to Nigeria’s security agencies for their efforts in combating crime and protecting national sovereignty. They reaffirmed their support for coordinated action between agencies, community policing, and grassroots intelligence initiatives, while also emphasizing the need for enhanced investment in surveillance capabilities and improved conditions for frontline personnel.
The PGF conveyed condolences to families impacted by insecurity, particularly in Benue and Niger States, while reaffirming their collective support for the President’s security strategies, especially his decisive actions in Benue.
Acknowledging the crucial role of local governments and community frameworks in service provision and democratic participation, the Forum highlighted the importance of strengthening these institutions.
On the topics of leadership, party unity, and revitalization, the Forum noted the entry of numerous Nigerians—including governors and National Assembly members—into the APC as a clear sign of public trust in the party’s leadership and the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Forum reiterated that the APC stands as the most cohesive political entity in Nigeria, with an unparalleled track record of reform, electoral victories, and national unity. They called for a strategic pivot toward initiatives that promote social equity and inclusive prosperity, emphasizing that while economic indicators show positive trends, reforms must prioritize the well-being of ordinary citizens.
Additionally, the Forum acknowledged the resignation of APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, seeing it as a reflection of the party’s ongoing evolution and reform.
Looking to the future, the PGF reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to a unified, just, and prosperous Nigeria. The governors vowed to implement significant reforms, promote socio-economic development, and strengthen institutional trust nationwide.
They resolved to uphold the core values of the APC, harnessing innovation and intergovernmental cooperation to foster grassroots development.
The governors encouraged Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to unite behind President Tinubu and the APC as the country moves toward a more secure, inclusive, and optimistic future.
