Students from Delta State have secured victory at the 2025 National Basic Education Debate Championship, earning the distinguished opportunity to represent Nigeria at the upcoming World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar.
The event, organized by the President’s Schools Debate, gathered talented young debaters from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to demonstrate their skills in public speaking, critical analysis, and collaborative teamwork.
The winning Delta State team includes Wisdom Chukwuma from Government College, Ughelli; Otorvo Uyoyou from Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun; Abraham Honour from Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka; Ekhamateh Splendour from Government Model Secondary School, Asaba; and Alika Daniel from Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale.
Through their powerful arguments, fluent delivery, and solid understanding of current affairs, the Delta team excelled over their competitors in a series of challenging rounds to clinch the championship title.
This remarkable achievement represents a key milestone in the educational development initiatives in Delta State, under the guidance of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
During a reception at Government House in Asaba on Tuesday, Governor Oborevwori hailed their success as a reflection of his administration’s strong commitment to enhancing education.
“It brings me great joy to witness the intellectual capability and articulate nature of these students. They are exemplary representatives of Delta State,” he remarked.
“This triumph is evidence that our investments in education—through school renovations, recruitment and training of teachers, provision of learning materials, and encouragement of extracurricular programs—are producing fruitful outcomes.”
The Governor highlighted the transformative impact of education, calling it essential for a successful life. He expressed pride that these students, educated locally, can stand confidently on an international platform.
“It fills me with joy to see young people articulate their thoughts so intelligently. These are not students trained abroad; they are talents nurtured right here in Delta State. This reflects our deep commitment to education,” he commented.
Governor Oborevwori assured that their success would further inspire his administration to enhance support for the educational sector.
“Representing Nigeria on a global scale already brings us pride. Winning the national debate confirms that we are moving in the right direction. It motivates us to do even more for our youth,” he stated.
As part of his administration’s MORE Agenda, the Governor announced that the state government would fully fund the students’ trip to the World Schools Debate Championship in Qatar.
“Delta State is honored to sponsor your international journey without hesitation. We are also dedicated to supporting other talented individuals from our state who can represent us well,” he said.
He encouraged the students to uphold good conduct, heed their coaches’ advice, and take full advantage of the learning and growth opportunities that international exposure affords.
“As you prepare for this trip, we expect you to act honorably, learn as much as possible, and return successful. With God’s grace, you will come back victorious,” he prayed.
Reaffirming the state’s resilience, Oborevwori expressed confidence in their capacity for international success, adding, “In Delta, we don’t settle for last place. You are already champions, and I trust you will achieve even more at the world competition. This debate experience is not just an event; it is the groundwork for your future.”
The Governor also acknowledged the students’ families for their support, encouraging the team to bring pride to their households and the state.
“You represent our state. The future is in your hands. With the right guidance and backing, there are no limits to your accomplishments. I wish you safe travels and pray for your success. You’ve made a strong start, and I believe you’ll finish well, in Jesus’ name,” he added.
Earlier, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, the Commissioner for Primary Education, congratulated the students on being exemplary representatives of the state and praised their outstanding performance at the national level.
Hon. Samuel Mariere, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), also expressed his gratitude for the logistical and financial support given during the championship, stating, “The students have made Delta State incredibly proud, and we are committed to giving our best as we gear up for the World Championship.”
Wisdom Chukwuma, the leader of the victorious team, expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for his efforts to enhance educational facilities and for his encouragement throughout the national competition.
He assured that the team would strive to make both the state and the nation proud on the global stage.
