The Delta State Commissioner for Works, Comrade Reuben Izeze, has reiterated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s dedication to finalizing the Orere Bridge project, despite facing logistical and environmental hurdles.

During a site inspection, Izeze commended Obakpor Engineering, the firm responsible for the construction, for their consistent advancement on the project.

“This marks the first time I have crossed the Orere River to witness work commencing on the opposite side of the bridge. They have successfully completed 250 meters on one side, with about 250 meters remaining on the other,” he noted.

Nevertheless, he mentioned that an unforeseen mechanical problem with the contractor’s barge had caused a minor setback. “There has been an issue with the propeller of their barge, which has delayed work for the last two days. I have recommended that they look into alternative options in the future to avoid similar interruptions,” Izeze remarked.

Accompanied by former state Commissioner, Edewor Omonemu, Chief Godwin Sito, Technical Assistant Engr. Ejovi Adasen, and Deputy Director of Highways Engr. Eghwrudje Ojarigho, Izeze emphasized the importance of maximizing work hours ahead of the impending rainy season, as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

“As we speak, rain is looming. We hope to make substantial progress before the downpours become too severe,” he stated.

Addressing concerns regarding the transportation of sand from Bayelsa State, Izeze acknowledged the logistical challenges involved. “It’s essential to note that sourcing sand from Kaiama in Bayelsa is significantly more costly than procuring it locally. The contractor has brought this to our attention, and we will inform His Excellency, Governor Oborevwori, to guide us on the next steps,” he explained.

Reflecting on improvements since his last visit, the commissioner expressed cautious optimism. “Since my previous visit, there has been notable advancement. The retaining walls are now complete. Although the surface still requires compaction, it’s evident that progress is being made. Projects of this nature take time, especially to ensure the materials cure and settle properly,” he added.

Also present at the inspection was the Archbishop of the Bendel Province of the Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Cyril Odutemu, a member of the Orere community. He expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for advancing a crucial project initiated by the prior administration.

“We are thankful to Governor Oborevwori for carrying on with this ambitious project. His refusal to abandon it confirms that government is indeed a continuum. Without his commitment, we wouldn’t be here today,” the Archbishop stated.

He commended Obakpor Engineering for their hard work, noting that the challenging terrain has presented particular difficulties. “Anyone familiar with this region will recognize that the pace of work has been commendable. The primary challenge has been periodic flooding, which has hampered progress,” he explained.

Archbishop Odutemu encouraged the residents of Orere to support the project by collaborating with the government and construction crews.

“If our community shows cooperation and gives their full backing, I am confident that even with the rains, work will continue. By the end of this year or early next year, we can celebrate the bridge’s completion,” he said.

Once finished, the Orere Bridge project is anticipated to greatly enhance connectivity and boost economic activities in the area.
