The Ibori Golf and Country Club (IGCC) in Asaba has announced the inaugural edition of the Governor’s Cup Invitational Golf Tournament, created to celebrate the 62nd birthday of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who will turn 62 on June 19.

In a statement made in Asaba on Monday, Club Captain Chief Patrick Ukah shared details about the esteemed week-long event, which is expected to attract over 300 participants, including top professional golfers, amateur players, and VIP guests from Nigeria and beyond.

Ukah, who is also the Director-General of the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, emphasized that the Governor’s Cup is not only a tribute to Governor Oborevwori’s birthday but also a celebration of 33 years of peaceful coexistence among the various ethnic communities in Delta State.

“This event aims to foster unity, promote sportsmanship, and encourage excellence through the cherished game of golf,” he stated.

The tournament is set to occur from Monday, June 23, to Saturday, June 28, at the scenic Ibori Golf and Country Club. The festivities will kick off on June 23 with the Caddy Tournament starting at 8:00 AM, followed by a two-day Professional Event on Wednesday, June 25, and Thursday, June 26, both starting at 7:00 AM. These rounds will feature some of Nigeria’s top professional golfers competing for a total prize pool of N3 million.

On Friday, June 27, qualifying rounds for club members and special guests will begin at 7:00 AM, culminating in the grand finale on Saturday, June 28, where 80 finalists and VIP players will compete for accolades, also starting at 7:00 AM.

The tournament will conclude with an elegant dinner and award ceremony at 6:00 PM on the same day.

Chief Ukah pointed out that the Governor’s Cup follows closely after the recently held IGCC “Captain’s Day Tournament” and the celebration of Governor Oborevwori’s two years in office.

He remarked, “These events demonstrate the club’s vision of utilizing golf as a means to enhance tourism, stimulate economic growth, and attract investments to Delta State and its capital, Asaba.”

Ukah also expressed appreciation to the various corporate sponsors, golfing partners, and supporters of the Ibori Golf and Country Club for their invaluable contributions that have made the tournament possible.

“The Governor’s Cup is not just about golf; it’s a celebration of leadership, unity, and the significant progress our state has achieved under the guidance of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori,” he concluded.
