The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) Ughelli Unit has called on residents of Ughelli and the wider Delta State community to actively resist criminal activities that threaten their wellbeing, including kidnapping, armed robbery, drug abuse, and various forms of violence.
This appeal was made during a recent awareness campaign held in Ughelli, which serves as the administrative center for Ughelli North local government.
National President of CDHR, Comrade Dr. Kehinde Taiga, along with State Chairman Comrade Jonathan Ogiama, emphasized the purpose of the rally was to educate citizens about the importance of opposing drug abuse, sexual violence, child abuse, extrajudicial killings, and promoting education as a means of prevention.
They expressed concern over the alarming prevalence of drug abuse, kidnapping, armed robbery, and cultism in Ughelli and throughout Delta State, asserting that the rally aimed to bring an end to these unacceptable behaviors.
Hon. Comrade Solomon Agbini Oghenero, the coordinator for the Ughelli North Unit, spoke to reporters, noting that the rally was prompted by the rising incidents of kidnapping, rape, sexual abuse, and domestic violence.
Comrade Agbini highlighted the critical role of education, asserting it is not a scam and that a lack of educational opportunities contributes significantly to human rights abuses and drug-related issues in the community.
He urged police and other security forces to take decisive action against drug dealers operating in Ughelli and its surrounding areas, insisting that those arrested should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
He concluded by stating that the proliferation of illicit drugs is driving many young people towards criminal activities such as armed robbery and kidnapping.
